NHS redeployment, any experience?

My friend is a band five nurse but due to illness cannot do her role at that band. HR are offering a band two but I this is an unfair drop. Anyone have any experience/advice?

I know, and I have seen some unreasonable redeployments in my time just because people kick up a fuss, rightly or wrongly! This lady is broken and I am just feeling overprotective.

I think the difficulty here is that you are looking at the person and thinking that she deserves a band 4 or at a push band 3, because of her long service etc. However, since Agenda for Change came in, jobs became role centred not person centred. So it doesn't matter how amazing a candidate is, if the role is a band 2 role, that's what is offered. Likewise, if a role requires skills at band 4 (very hard to get in admin - really quite senior posts) then if the candidate only has band two skills, even if in other areas they far exceed requirements, they won't be matched to the post.

Having said all that, NHS Direct (111) offer band 6 for qualified nurses - no manual handling. Occupational health is another area with very little manual handling. Education roles have significantly less MH than clinical roles. Many specialist roles have much less MH than ward work. Practice nursing... In fact there are so many things i can think of just in 30 seconds that it makes me wonder why your friend has gone as far as redeployment instead of just finding a better job?

Yes I am biased, I agree. I think her confidence is shattered by this chronic back pain.

Can't she get a nursing position working in one of the day clinics? I'm a midwife not a nurse so I don't know a lot about nursing but as a student I did some general nursing placements and I worked alongside a gynae clinic nurse who didn't do any manual handling.

There's also nursing roles in stuff like infection control, education, blood transfusion. Problem is they don't come up very often.

Someone I know is going to be redeployed from a band 6 role due to ill health and they have warned her it may just be a band 2 level role. Band 5 admin roles tend to be quite specialised/advanced so would normally be filled by someone who has been doing admin work for a while.

Has she considered research nursing. I'm a research nurse and I love it.

As harsh as it sounds I think that if your friend wants her pick of jobs she needs to start applying for those she's skilled for. I have got to the end of my path as a teacher - I just couldn't hack it any more. It's been up to me to find an alternative and it's much lower paid unfortunately. I've been in a difficult place emotionally due to a bereavement but it wasn't for my employer to find me a route out of it.

Hello everyone

I would like to ask for advice and ideas on behalf of my friend who is currently employed by NHS as Band 3 clinic receptionist/administrator. She has been diagnosed with anxiety and has been off sick for 4 weeks now. For almost a year, she has struggled with anxiety most especially when facing patients and patients’ relatives on the desk. She works in a stressful department where she has to deal with angry, upset, and aggressive patients. She has already seen the Health at Work (Occupational Health) and they have recommended for the management to have a dialogue with my friend. Have u got any idea if my friend can be offered a redeployment option? She is hardworking, smart, and responsible. Her anxiety level has lowered and she can do other jobs as long as it’s not on the reception desk where she feels that she is being watched by everyone and where she sits down in front of the computer while clients look down on her, which makes her feel intimidated.

Please help. Smile

Joy, it's better if you start your own thread about this really, your friend can look to see what other jobs are available on the NHS website or talk to h.r about moving to another department.
