I started a new job two months ago and I was thrilled to have got it. It was everything I wanted on paper- nice small local business, good wage and near to home.

However, the atmosphere is awful. Firstly, the company is run by a married couple. She is the managing director and he is the office manager. When I started there was a staff of 4 long term employees apart from them, but in my first week they all left. Now it is just me and the married couple :/

They argue in front of me- and she's a total nightmare. She snaps at you even if you're asking a sensible question. I feel I'm walking on eggshells. Ive never worked in an environment where I am treated like a child. I'm not even allowed to make a cup of tea unless they say so.

To make matters worse, the husband is both racist and homophobic, and blames me for mistakes that are actually his fault because he has misinformed me.

It took me so long to find this job and I was on the edge of a bloody breakdown with job hunting after three years off. What to do?

Leave.

I had a job where the situation was similar to what you have described.

Stick it out while you look for another job, it's easier to get a job when you already have one.

I was also in a near identical situation with a husband and wife team. I left work one lunchtime and phoned the local uni to ask about course places. They gave me a verbal acceptance with my grades and I went back and handed in my notice. I nearly had to take them to court over withholding wages but it was the best thing I ever did. Get out.

I don't mean leave without anything to go to, but fine something, anything and go.

Funny you should say that HelenF35 I'd been thinking of doing an MA instead of returning to office work.

Do it! I didn't intend to go back to uni for another year or two but shitty job motivated me. Everything happens for a reason.

Find any old casual job so that you can afford to leave that awful place, and then focus on applying for the MA.
