I am 26, went to university, but fell pregnant in my final year so left with a diploma. I now have 2 boys, one who has just started school full time, the other starts in Sept 2009. I am now thinking about what I can do in 2009. I know I want to work, but also be able to pick up kids from school some of the time and attend school stuff. I am thinking about doing a training course or FE in something, posssibly midwife, teacher, hairdresser! Its all so varied and I am a bit lost as to what to do!
Anyone got any suggestions to what pays well (I do have 2 years to train), is flexible with kids, and is going to give me a bit of reward and indepedance from my little sprouts!!

A friend of mine was in a very similar position, she was on her own and so needed something that would pay well but would also afford her the time to spend with thechildren, she started out by helping out at her oldest (7yrs) ds school, she then after a couple of months was offered a place as a TA and after a year she managed to bag herself a job as a Resource managerwhich saw her money double. It was the answer to her problems, it meant that she didn'y have to spend al her wages on childcare and was around in he term times. They even offered to send her on a teaching course and pay for the fees.

Hi Youngmumoftwo

I have an advert running on MN at the moment, here , for a business opportunity that may be just what you are looking for. I work from home, completely around my family, always able to pick up DS from school, be around in the holidays etc. I used to be a teacher by the way.
Anyway, do take a look and drop me a line if you think it may be of interest ...

Youngmumoftwo, there are various choose-your-own-hours jobs touted around: before deciding to give any of them a go, google the company name and "MLM" or "multi-level marketing" as some of the companies involved in this are a total waste of time and money, others can provide you with a steady (but not enormous) income and flexible hours. A good rule of thumb is: do your earnings depend more on selling the product/s or on recruiting more salespeople into 'your team'? If it's the latter, run away and don't sign anything.
THough I don't know much about teaching, other people have posted what sounds like good advice about teaching assitant jobs, etc. Good luck.
