Really would love to apply for this job, but missing one qualification..

There's a job I'd love to apply for, it's perfect in every way, not too far to commute, it fits around my children's school and nursery, there's just one problem, one of the qualifications they want is Maths GCSE grade C or above, now mine is grade E ( I was always better at English and Arty stuff!) Do you think I should still apply, or will they take one look at my application and chuck it in the bin? I do have the other qualifications and experience they need to do the job, just not that one! Thanks in advance.

Depending on what qualifications you have gained since then, you may not even need to mention your GCSEs. Definitely apply, nothing to lose!

I don't have it either - have the equivalent of a D, but I have a degree and have used basic maths in some aspects of my previous job. I find that employers ask for it more now as students have to take English & maths til they pass so it's seen as a basic qual. Depends on the job - teaching you would have to have it though! I massively regret not retaking it, although it wasn't relevant to my career up until now.

Or is it advice? I've had too many glasses of red tonight!

Advise is the verb, advice is the noun.
So you meant advice.

I would say apply, but be prepared for your application to be discarded if there's a glut of candidates who do have Maths at C or above.
I've been the person tasked with sifting 350 applications for 1 post, with time to interview just 10 candidates. You have to start somewhere, and the logical start is to check that applicants meet the stated criteria. So those without the qualifications we asked for went straight in the No pile without further reading.
Next came mistakes, spelling and presentation. Anything with crossing out, Tippex, smudges or blots went out as it showed a lack of care and "attention to detail" was high on the job spec.
That whittled it down to around 100, which was where it started to get difficult. I sorted through job histories and skills and got to 30 really good candidates.
And so it went back to qualifications again. I weighed up relevant experience versus highest qualified, and I have to say that, when faced with multiple applicants with similar (good) experience, I had to choose the highest qualified, i.e. those with best grades.
Eventually I got to 15 excellent potentials and had to pass them to my manager for the final cut as each of them were excellent on paper. She whittled down to the 10 she wanted to interview and then it was entirely up to the candidates to impress her and the rest of the interview panel, which luckily didn't include me as I'd have employed all of them and bankrupted the company Grin.
At interview 6 were terrible, 2 were OK and 2 were amazingly good and the cause of much head scratching. The final appointment turned out to be utterly wonderful and we worked together for a few years as a great team; in fact we're still friends even though I left over 3 years ago.
This is very long-winded but I'm hoping to give you an idea of what happens in the event of a very high number of applications for a popular job.
FWIW I've also been on the receiving end of a similar recruitment process and was turned down for a role that I could have done standing on my head, but I was missing a formal typing qualification that they required. This being in spite of me being able to touch type at nearly 100wpm, lay out letters and having evidence to prove it, and having worked at a more senior level. But I still lacked a piece of paper that was requested.
Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Bloody hell, that was waaaay longer than I intended. Sorry.

Thanks Harriet, that's great.

i have just (yesterday!) got a job where the level C or above maths was a requirement (& I haven't got it - see above). It was a bit of luck as I was already temporary staff so they knew me. Not sure I would've got it going in 'cold'. Good luck & no harm in trying to get the grade. That was my next step if I hadn't got a job before end of this term so I scraped in...

That's good to know JustDance, and congratulations!
