I've sold some academic books on Amazon, that DH had lying around, samples I think?

The best packing material I've found is something Frances recommended, a sort of corrugated cardboard that sticks to itself. You can get it at Staples.

The one real hassle is, once someone buys something, you have to ship within two business days, I think. So you need to unlist everything when you go on holiday. And there isn't a simple "take a break" button, so you can come back and just relist it all automatically. (We unlisted for the August holiday and haven't relisted yet, oops.)

Many of the books I list other people are selling for 1p. So the more unusual the book the better. Popular paperbacks not really worth it unless they are very slim and you can make money on the postage.

Fillyjonk · 22/01/2007 08:10

nqc, there is holiday option, you don't have to relist!

i cant recall if they extend your 2 months though.

oh thats a pita, the 2 month thing...

tescs etc do someti,es do very cheap jiffy bagsm like 5 for £1

For popular paperbacks, this site is worth it:

green booksellers

Every book is sold for the same fixed price of £3.75 regardless of what it is. The seller gets £3 of that, with a small donation to charity with each sale.

Also listing couldn't be easier because you just enter the ISBN and the condition, and the description of the book and photo appears automatically.

The book stays on the site until someone buys it, and then it's up to you to post it, as on ebay and amazon.

Oh, arse, is there, fillyjonk? I couldn't see it, back in July. Will have to relist and see how it goes, anyway. I did keep the "unlist" email, so at least I know what I've got, plus whatever DH has received in the interim.

Fillyjonk · 22/01/2007 08:31

i'm sure there is

might be for limited time though or something

Avoid stuff that is in the Top 50 (or has been recently or is being sold by Tescos for £3.

I found that parenting books resold fairly well. Test books and technical books get the most including books on economics, banmking anf finance, but they need to be relatively recent (ie not totaly out of date!). There may also be some money to be made as an arbitrage betweenm Amazon.com especially on books recommended on here (eg 123 Magic etc). Most UK people check the Amazon.co.uk for prices rather than .com

aDad, that is a fantastic website. I will definitely be using it!

Thanks!

Great! it came highly recommended by another MNer.

I'm going to put some books up for sale there myself this week.

nikkie · 22/01/2007 19:46

Think I will have to try the Green website, have a few books to sell.

Skribble · 22/01/2007 21:49

Oh I might give them a go, I get through a lot of novels.

In terms of selling, dont' forget abebooks.com for rare titles and also the mosh pit that is Ebay.
