Hi all, well here's a bit of background and an update -
We have run a Hotel in Blackpool with my Mum for the past 2.5 years (and met lots of lovely Mumsnetters ). We decided at the end of last season that we didn't want to be Hoteliers anymore so we sold the Hotel.
Unfortunately the sale fell through so we decided to live in the Hotel and once we have sold all of the extra beds etc.. we will apply for change of use and it will just be a huge house. It works well, there is more than enough room for all of us and we don't have a mortgage.
DH and I still wanted to be self employed (Mum has a decent job now) so we decided we wanted to open a shop....
This is where we are at the moment -
We have found an empty shop in an out of town location, still busy and close to a bank and Tesco express. We've managed to negotiate a new 5 year lease (with break clause just in case) it is all with the solicitors at the moment. I have been buying stock - we will be selling ex highstreet/chainstore womens and girlswear, there is a shop similar the other side of town that is always busy but is poorly laid out and a bit of a jumble sale so I know that the concept is viable and the markup on the items is good.
Hopefully we will have the keys to the shop soon and will be able to start the refit etc... It's going to be a steep learning curve I need an overall colour scheme, dummies, learn how to dress the windows, get a sign, a till, buy the right stock.... the list is endless
Anyone else started from scratch or have knowledge of this type of retail? - Any advice or good ideas appreciated!! I am excited about the project but it's also pretty scary!!

pruni, Richards used to have wonderful changing rooms, with proper closing doors and 3 side mirrors. Now they are out of busines of course. poss connected!

Pmsl at Wank Skirts. I'll try to upload some stock pictures and do a link so that you can see the sort of stuff I've bought so far. I'm sticking to ladies size 8-24 (warehouse, M&S, Next, New Look, River Island, George...) and girls age 8-16 (new look & Tammy mainly).
There is space for a fitting room but I don't think I will put one in at first. The majority of customers will be local so returns shouldn't be a problem, there is a bus stop right outside so the windows will be a real priority. I'm really targetting people who don't want to go into town. There are lots of shops selling cheap crap quality clothing dotted around the outskirts of town but I want to sell cheap good quality clothing IYSWIM.

A little place beside me keeps a box of toys/books for children to look at whilst their mothers are browsing - works well with ds!

Good luck!
My tip is, leave people alone and let them browse, and only have a conversation with them if they start it. Nothing makes me shun a shop faster than knowing I will be chased around it by the owner asking what I want or trying to have a chat!

bubblerock · 19/01/2007 12:49

I have heard of people weeing in changing rooms!

Does anyone know how much a license is to play background music/radio - I don't want it to be uncomfortably quiet.

Oh and there is nothing worse than going into a small clothes shop and the owner is standing cackling away with her friends. Very off putting.

nailpolish · 19/01/2007 12:51

a local independent shop beside me plays robbie videos and concerts live on a plasma screen behind her checkout desk - the shop is busy ALL the time

Swot up on body shapes and colour theory.

Eg blue based skin suits cool colours etc. Or go to a "Colour me Beautiful" website-if it still exists!

Never ever say "if it's not on the rails we haven't got it", even if it's true!

Imafairy · 19/01/2007 13:18

Know your stock! Might sound obvious but so often I've found, say a nice top and saked if there was anything to go with it, to which the response it "emmm, uh, no, don't think so". If someone finds something nice it would be good if you could quickly whip out something that goes with it (which reminds me, you also need to get very good at judging peoples sizes!!!!!).

Good luck!

snowleopard · 19/01/2007 13:37

Oh yes fizzbuzz I hate it when you ask if they have something and they say "only what's out there". Aaaaarrggh

bubblerock · 19/01/2007 13:48

Just managed to put a few stock pictures on a webpage HERE - this is only a bit of it obviously, I have paid between £1 and £7 per piece mostly I'm trying to keep the cost price of the adult clothes under £5 and the childrens clothing even less, although these are better as you don't pay VAT on top. It's hard to know how much stock I need until I get the keys to the shop.

If you're not arty how about putting up an ad/asking around at local art college to see if there are any students who would like to do this for free/discount on clothes?

When I was at school and college I used to do window displays for my Mums friends fabric/haberdashery shop just because it was something different to do and photos of my displays could go in my portfolio.

Worth a try. Good luck

CrocodileKate · 19/01/2007 13:57

I am liking them Bubble.

bubblerock · 19/01/2007 14:46

We have got an art & design college on our road so that could be worth a try! Good idea
Thanks for the feedback Kate!

Oooh Bubblerock they look good. There's a shop like this in my hometown and I've always found the stuff too middle-aged, but this is a great selection with something for everyone. I think you have the necessary eye!

fizzbuzz · 19/01/2007 15:43

Ooooh very nice! here is another thing you may or may not agree with!

A shop near me sells a lot of seconds, BUT they are priced about £5.00 cheaper than in the proper shop, so don't feel as if I'm getting much of a bargain IYKWIM.

bubblerock · 20/01/2007 08:50

That's not much of a bargain is it? I'm hoping to make a good profit but also keep the prices low, some of the items still have the prices on and as an example, the black Tammy coat is priced at £28 but I would sell it for £8 - £12 and they're not even seconds!

Miaou · 20/01/2007 08:52

wish you were opening it up near me .... !

bubblerock · 20/01/2007 09:00

You never know, if it goes well it could be the start of a mini empire lol - or you could open one too, I'm doing it on a tiny budget (fingers crossed!).

Miaou · 20/01/2007 09:25

hehehe, don't think there'd be much call for a clothes shop here - we only have one shop in our village (post office/general store) !

CheesyFeet · 20/01/2007 09:35

Whereabouts in Blackpool is it Bubbkerock? My Mum lives there so I'm there quite a lot, and me & Mum are always on the look out for a bargain!

Please say South Shore...
