How do you get sick pay (SSP from the IR??)

As an employer a member of staff has gone sick - she has put her back out

I can't see her working with babies for at the very least days possibly weeks

I don't do sick pay - but surely she can get SSP - but where from?
How do I get it?
Do I have to pay it then get it back

I am not unsympathetic (esp as I put my back out in Sept) but I am frightened that I might have to pay out twice (ie for a temp & for her sick pay iyswim)

HELP??

Katy. As an employer you have to pay SSP after 3 days of absence with illness/imjury.
How do you pay your staff? Do you use payroll software?

Katymac · 17/01/2007 21:56

I use the IR CD rom

But who do I get the money from - surely I am not responsible (please say I'm not)

The employee is entitled by law for a percentage of her salary after 3 days. You have to pay it, it's statuatory, but you may be able to recoup a percentage of it from your NI contributions.

It's not too frightening an amount, Katy. It's a small pecentage of salary. But yes, her injury will cost you in temp. fees as well as the SSP.

Yes. Call IR.

hatwoman · 17/01/2007 22:01

ring IR. I'm fairly sure you get it back - I know you get statutory maternity pay back.

Bubble99 · 17/01/2007 22:05

Stat Mat pay is higher - 90% for X amount of weeks etc. Stat sick pay is nowhere near as much. Both can be crippling for a small business. Even though you can reclaim all of the stat mat and some of the stat sick, IIRC.

It's £70.05 a week

That's nearly 12 hours work

I'll have to pay 42 hrs for a 30 hr week

This could go on for weeks (or even months)

Damn

I think I can take out insurance for Maternity pay (however I just employed people who already have their family atm - I will need to think about it for the nursery)

I am not unfeeling but this stuffs me up completely

Don't worry about Mat pay. If you're a small business you actually get extra back on top of your payments.

Katymac · 17/01/2007 22:16

It's to do with how much NI I pay

I think I pay about £74

13% of that is £9.64

So I can claim back £ 60.41 (I think)

So I will only cost me about £9.64 a week - gosh that's better

I know I am mean not paying sick pay - but they get time off each week to go to assembly and I provide chocolate and ice creams for walking up to school with
