Work expecting me to use my mobile phone at my expense

(I also posted last week about my appraisal which will be tomorrow.. it will be interesting to see if this is brought up in it)

We are an independent charity shop so I fully understand that they need to keep expenses low , e.g. we wash the windows ourselves, do the rubbish etc.. this was in my job description. I agree with this , more money for the charity and I knew the score from the start
However, an ongoing issue has been the use of the shop's landline to ring mobile numbers. Usually this can't be helped as only a mobile number has been given to ring. I don't make phone calls unless really necessary. I've been told time and time again to use my mobile phone instead, to ring mobile numbers (and if it's to the branch manager for e.g., ring or text her from my mobile, asking her to ring me back on the landline)
I have told them time and time again that I get no signal in our shop.
I also am not contract these days for various reasons.. I'm pay as you go. Old fashioned perhaps but I had reasons and it suits me. But surely that's not relevant because if I had a contract I could still not use my phone there. The whole town (more village really) is pretty much a black hole.I have to go out and walk around to find reception. I don't get breaks so I can't leave the shop anyway.
Branch manager has acknowledged before that I don't get a signal but always forgets. I just got another snotty email re the shop's phone bill and again asking me to text/ring where possible from my mobile. We had an incident when I worked yesterday and I had to ring a lot of mobile numbers (all the shop's key holders etc) so no doubt I'll be hauled up for this too even though was asked to ring them
I can't afford to do this anyway (i.e. ring from my phone). I don't get any free calls or texts since switched to pay as you go. But surely that's my choice?
It's not like I miss it at home either as I'm also in a 'black hole' area here (v rural) I use email (from the PC) for nearly all contact or I take incoming. My mobile is saved for emergencies i.e. if my car breaks down. I often don't have credit on it anyway, I live a hand to hand existence on minimum part time wage

I appreciate a charity needs to cut costs but you'd think any business would factor making mobile phone calls into its budget? On a normal week it's only a handful a week but this is what I got the email about

alltoo if you're a registered charity and you have the charity's number the accounts should be filed with the charities commission. You can find these online. They'll definetly list wages as an expense. Probably won't go into individual detail (unless you're a huge well known charity) but you can get an idea of how much they're spending on wages (and advertising...)

What untrusting bosses!

How'd it go op?

DilysPrice · 28/04/2016 07:28

A five pound monthly goody bag from Giff Gaff and a ten pound dumb phone would probably save the shop money. I get that it's kind of annoying for the managers because that's seventy quid they wouldn't have to spend if the OP had the same mobile setup as her coworker - but she doesn't and that's the way it is.

Hope the appraisal went well. In my experience what you describe is sadly typical of many charities. They offer nothing more than the minimum wage to workers and use the 'we are a charity' excuse to justify cheap practices such as expecting staff to subsidise the charity by using their own phones (management won't be on minimum wage or denied reasonable expenses).

For about £20 per month with BT they could have unlimited calls on the shop landline. Problem solved. We have this as we run the card machine through it.

I put my foot down for once / stood up for myself.
There wasn't a lot they could say to that. I don't get a signal but they realise I won't be paying anyway. Why should I. They know what I earn! (30p more than min wage, as a manager)
Appraisal was ok all things considering…. quite a bit of nitpicking… very petty (including begin accused of things - nothing major, but annoying) first time I have stood up to them… they are so contradictory (i.e. one week tell you to do something and the next week have a go at you for doing it, having forgotten they asked you to in the first place.. it's exhausting!) I'm honestly starting to believe they both have MH problems, and I don't mean that in a critical way...
The branch manager is at least giving me her landline number to use which is a turnaround I suppose

Well done Flowers
I don't understand why people are suggesting cheap mobiles, why would that be better than just using the land line?

Penfold007 · 29/04/2016 07:11

Well done for being assertive. £7.50 per hour for a job with management responsibilities is disgraceful. Might be worth using your experience to look for a job where you are valued and paid properly.
