Annual Leave by Industry

Does anyone know if there is any data out there for average annual leave entitlement by industry? I don't think I have a very good deal at the moment and I would like some data to present to my employer when I ask for more holiday entitlement. I haven't been able to find any information after googling for ten mins. There is loads of information about salary, but nothing for annual leave.

Currently 28 days + 1 extra day per yr of service (up to 5 years) + bank hols. I have been there 3 years so get 31.

It is being cut to a max of 30 + bank hols next year.

CountryLovingGirl · 20/04/2016 12:42

NHS 10 years service so I get 33 days plus 8 bank hols. Need more!

TheExtraGuineaPig · 20/04/2016 13:08

DrDreReturns - I used to work for a really big US vendor - I think we had 22 plus the bank holidays then - not much better!! :)

pitterpatterrain · 20/04/2016 13:11

25+ bank holidays. First 5 years 20+ bank holidays.

notsomanky · 20/04/2016 13:20

Work for a charity - we get 22 days plus 8 bank holidays.

Notstayingup · 20/04/2016 13:30

Professional services - we get 25 days standard excluding BHs and after 5 years 27 days

EBearhug · 21/04/2016 01:10

IT - 25 days + bank holidays.

Was recently looking at another job which I think was 22 days + bank holidays. It was one of a number of reasons I declined to apply.

ilovesooty · 21/04/2016 01:31

Charity. 27 plus BH rising to 32 plus BH after one year's service. We also get an option to buy 5 extra days.

Panadbois · 28/04/2016 20:16

I've just done a search on this topic just to see how bad my holiday entitlement is. I work for a small company, 40 hours a week and get 20 days A/L plus bank holidays. Though we're off between Christmas and new year which meant I had another four days while the office was closed.
Raw deal? How can I negotiate a better deal? Current contract ends end of Aug.

Panadbois · 28/04/2016 20:23

Or does a job which gives you 28 days leave include bank holidays? Which would mean I've had 32 days, which isn't a bad deal??

Can't go in guns blazing just yet! Grin

EBearhug · 28/04/2016 20:34

I get 25 days plus bank holidays.

alltouchedout · 28/04/2016 20:38

At my employer you start with 25 days plus 4 privilege days and most of the bank holidays. Annual leave rises by 1 day for each year of service to a maximum of 30 days. I work for a charity.

Panadbois · 28/04/2016 20:40

So do you book annual leave for the days between Christmas and new year?

AgingJuvenileBinkyHuckaback · 28/04/2016 20:46

Financial sector - 25 days plus bank holidays, increasing with length of service over 5 years has been the norm most places I've worked. OTOH significant overtime is expected and some more senior people have had to cancel holidays at busy times.

Powaqa · 28/04/2016 21:32

Finance sector - 22 days plus 8 BH. You get an extra day in your 5th year and a day for every full year after that to a maximum of 28 days. We can buy up to 10 extra days a year and we get TOIL. We close over Christmas and have to use AL in between Christmas and NY .

MY DH works in IT - he gets 20 days plus the BH. They are expected to be on call for no extra pay and his firm only pays SSP. He is now looking for another job as he has had enough - getting docked a days pay when he was sick was the last straw

OublietteBravo · 28/04/2016 21:37

Large multinational (I'm UK based). We get 25 days + 8 bank holidays.

We're not allowed to get extra holiday entitlement for long service because apparently this could fall foul of age discrimination laws Hmm

EBearhug · 28/04/2016 22:11

So do you book annual leave for the days between Christmas and new year?

Yes, if you want them. It's usually pretty quiet, and we're usually able to work from home. Someone will be on-call (but we get an on-call allowance, and there's no way I'd do IT on-call without some recompense - I resent it enough as it is, and only carry on because it would increase the burden for my colleagues if not.)

Eve · 28/04/2016 22:13

22 days private sector

notsomanky · 29/04/2016 07:14

DH in IT gets 25 days plus the bank holidays.

The site closes for the week between Christmas and New Year and they have to take the days out of their annual leave allowance.

He would want the time off anyway as we need him to be home for the children that week, so for us it's not a problem doing this - we just have to juggle the rest of his leave and mine to maximise holiday childcare cover.

Some of his colleagues really resent the enforced closure coming out of their annual leave though.

eurochick · 29/04/2016 07:43

I'm in law. My current firms gives an unusually generous 30 days plus bank holidays. Previous firms have all been 25 plus bh so I would say that is the standard.

Panadbois · 29/04/2016 08:24

Thank you 😊

problembottom · 30/04/2016 15:16

I'm in journalism, I get 35 holiday days, 2 duvet days and we are informally given either Christmas week or New Year week off each year.

Both my DSis are teachers though so they're always off!

WeAllHaveWings · 30/04/2016 18:18

my old work place it was 33 including bank holidays then an extra day annually when you hit 10, 15, 20 and 25 years service eventually getting 37 days a year.

current workplace is also 33 days with no additional holidays for length of service, but they are very flexible with WFH and flexible for appointments for me, ds or my elderly mum etc so its much better. We can also buy extra holidays (at line managers discretion) at the beginning of the year if we want.

WeAllHaveWings · 30/04/2016 18:20

also should say the only bank holidays we have to take are xmas day and new years day, the rest we can work if we want and have another day of later.

Manufacturing.

BestIsWest · 30/04/2016 18:26

25 plus bank holidays, rising to 28 after 10 years. Financial sector. DH is civil servant with 30 plus two 'privilege' days.
