Odd question... how do I ask for a job without sounding insane??

I went into the offices of the local radio station to pick some stuff up a few weeks ago, and it was really weird - the atmosphere in there was amazing, and since then I have had this overwhelming feeling that I want to work there... before then I have been quite happy to stay a sahm for the next few years.

I don't know what jobs they might have or anything (no "jobs" section on the website ), and writing them a letter telling them that it felt nice in there and I want to work there might just make them think I'm a nutter

How would I go about finding out if they had any jobs I could do?

What were you picking up?

morningpaper · 28/12/2006 20:59

(Just wondering what connection you already had)

What would you want to do, admin?

FLAMEinEckItsYuleAgain · 28/12/2006 21:02

They were donating raffle prizes for the school my mum works at - I said I'd get them on my way past.

No connection pmsl - this is why I am insane

Yup, admin is good. I'm happy to do anything - its a really weird feeling

I would just write saying you wondered if there were any jobs, you don't need to go on about how nice the place is until they are interviewing you ,

FLAMEinEckItsYuleAgain · 28/12/2006 21:36

Is a "do you have any jobs?" letter a bit blunt though?

I think you should wait till they are doing a phone-in....and gush about the place live on air

franke · 28/12/2006 21:39

Why don't you 'phone the main switchboard, if they have one, and ask where you would find out about current vacancies?

Spec letter On spec

Frostythesurfmum · 28/12/2006 21:41

Nothing wrong with just sending a speculative letter with a CV.

FLAMEinEckItsYuleAgain · 28/12/2006 21:46

Ooh thankyou! They're great.

Will have to update my cv... This is all very odd. I have no idea what I would do about childcare or anything, it just seems like I should be doing it.

Go for it, too often I have let things pass me by with poor excuses and lack of action.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 28/12/2006 21:52

agree, send a spec letter. but do bear in mind that if you get a job there it might be totally different to when you just went there to collect something. I had a similar experience once when I was looking for work in Cardiff. sent a spec letter to a place where I really wanted to work, got a letter back about three months later asking me to go for an interview, and the guy interviewing was an absolute tosser and I was actually quite glad when i didn't get the job

crunchie · 28/12/2006 21:55

OK flamey, my advice, since I have been a recruitment consultant for all of - oooh let me see - 10 weeks now Is to just write that letter and ask them.

Honestly. One of the main parts of my job is phoneing people up and asking them if there are any jobs going!!

Seruiously you never know they might have had someone quit that day!!

However what I would do first is have a think about what you could offer them. Look at your cv and decide what sort of job you could do. Admin, accounts, sales, presenting - whatever. Just saying 'gissa job' won't really help. You need to say 'HERE I AM' I can help you as I am so wonderful

I worked part time at a local radio station while I was doing A levels, and it was probably one of the nicest places I've ever worked. I got to do lots of the live events stuff - christmas charity appeals, snowlines, live sports reports, election results, etc. It will no doubt have changed a lot by now though - back then we had to maintain a record library on vinyl (I got lots of freebies from visiting reps too!), now it's no doubt all digital.

DimpledThighs · 29/12/2006 10:36

If you really want to get in there you could offer to do office type stuff on a voluntary basis and explaint hat you have worked in the area before and are looking to get paid work. Often this can lead to a job either straight away or when the next thing comes up. People are much more willing to employ someone they know so you will put yourself in a really strong position when something comes up.

Thank you so much everyone (and for not telling me that I'm nuts )

I'm going to wait until after the 5th (grandad's funeral) and then attack my cv and send it in.

good luck - (s)he who dares.....

Frostythesurfmum · 29/12/2006 17:43

If it's feeling right then go with it.

Sorry about your grandad . Hope you're OK.
