Does anyone work in a pub?

Itds looking increasingly like I need to go out to work as I am really struggling to find reasonable staff for my business (although I could do the 2 together). So in order to fit in with the school and dh's new job 8.30-5pm (not shifts for a change) I was considering bar work.

Was wondering (a) how much one would get paid p/h and (b) what sort of hours would be available?

TIA

To be honest I just want to earn some money without the worry of having to take time off to cover for the childrens' sickness/inset days/school holidays etc.

i work in a pub. i earn £4.95 an hour but i am 18. over 21s get more althuogh not sure how much. have you considered waitressing? you generally come in later, go home earlier than bar staff and there's the bonus of tips, which can almost double your wage per hour some days. the only thing with this type of work is xmas. anyone with families usually gets excused from working xmas day unless they want to but you will be expected to work 3 key shifts out of xmas eve, boxing day, new years eve and new years day. if i work nights in the week i generally finish 10 - 10:30, but at weekends it is more like 11 - 11:30, but nights normally generate more tips than days. sorry if im rambling and obviously it will vary slightly in different establishments.

I have always found working in a bar that you get paid the minimum wage, very rarely anything about and also, they like most staff to work nights and weekends, more so if they are new staff.

It tends to be the staff who have been there the longest that get the best hours.

It is hard work though, but, it is also a good laugh and i've made some really good mates through it.

oh also make sure you check what the general start time is, cos at our place is 5 but a couple come in at 5:30/6 to fit in with their husbands. if you were to consider waitressing apply to restaurants where the waitress takes your order, as opposed to where you go and order at the bar. i always find when you work in pubs that serve food you don't get the tips. frankie and bennys, pizza hut, chiquitos, tgi's, beefeater, M&B are all good for tips.

Check what time you finish too, I used to work in a bar (only did 3 weeks) but was paid til 3 but expected to carry on until work was done (bar shut at 3 but still needed to restock/wash up etc) so it was more like 5am.

i would pick a pub as opposed to a bar. pubs close earlier than bars. but as i said i'm more for waiting on cos less work, better hours, more money!

Agree that waitressing is the best bet money wise. I was a trainee pub manager and it was a killer hours wise & money wise and cheesy chat up line wise! Did meet my DP though so not all bad

i hate having to work on thebar where i work. no extra bonuses tipwise except for maybe a few quid and have to stay til 1am bottling up, mopping, tidying tables YUCK!

3xamum · 29/12/2006 02:22

Bottling up - yuck I've tried to forget how shite that is

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 29/12/2006 02:24

and it takes me twice as long as everyone else cos i am the weakest person in the world and have to carry up each box on its own! and mopping i am crap at. just looks like someone swished dirty water round on the floor - which to be honest is just what i do
