Hold out wait until you have another one or is there any option of a career break ?

I know that if I get pregnant on my career break I'll get maternity pay .

childmind?
Depends on where you live as to how much you would earn though

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 21/12/2006 18:49

can you make anything? do you have any skills that you could teach to people?

SenoraPartridge · 21/12/2006 18:51

selling online would require a lot of time and a lot of outlay to pay back 600 a week any time soon.

what do you want to do?

popsycal · 21/12/2006 19:01

600 a month folks....

SenoraPartridge · 21/12/2006 20:22

whoops

I meant to type month, not week.

Are you at all crafty ??

Friend of mind has just set herself up making tiaras and haedresses for weddings - also bespoke jewellery. No expereience - just knows what she likes ! Beads etc are really cheap and the mark up is vast ! eg for a tiara she charges about £120 to £150 and the beads etc are less than £20 ! Does it in front on TV in the evenings.

Soem outlay on bus cards, website, attending wedding fayres etc - but has persuaded quite a few florists etc to display samples and cards for free.

Similarly - crafty jewellery - seems to sell well at village hall/school fairs etc

PartridgeinaRustyBearTree · 21/12/2006 20:28

How about a teaching assistant in a school - with the advantage that when dd goes to school, you'll have the holidays off

SenoraPartridge · 21/12/2006 20:30

really? the outlay i was thinking of is on website and advertising. the former can be cheap but cheap doesn't look professional. plus advertising these days costs a lot unless you have a good niche. how many tiaras has your friend sold?

scatterbrain · 21/12/2006 20:34

started slow - but it's all word of mouth - and she had an ad in a wedding mag which has been really good. Last week she sold 6 ! And she has been making commissioned necklaces for Xmas - that came about by putting one of her necklaces in a charity auction - three chaps approached her to make special necklaces for their wives.

Thing is - minimal outlay - no childcare costs - work on your own sofa !! I wish I was arty !!

Thanks for the replys. Maybe I should wait until we have another baby so i get mat pay etc. Jewellery idea sounds good but not sure were i would start to make a tiara. I was thinking maybe a ebay business buy things in bulk and then sell on. My job does fit in well with dd I work a wed and sunday afternoon so dh about on sunday and she goes to playschool then my mum has her till dh comes home on wednesday. Just fed up with not be able just get on with looking after people and having to deal with grumpy relatives and staff! and all the crappy politics. Because I am part time I am never quite sure what going on the ward but definatley dont want to do any more hours. Also fed up with endless paper work. So about having such a big moan, It would be the perfect job with out all the crap! I have to think about what I could sell on ebay.

Cedar,I feel exactly the same! Have been staff nurse on paediatric ward for 17 years, have gradually with each baby reduced my hours and now only work 10 hours a week.Am lucky, all my money extra to the family budget, but even working so few hrs still get well over £600 a month.Am sure loads of mumsnetters would love such hrs and job,but agree nursing awful now, don't know how much longer I can stand it either.Thing is,now it is good money really.(cAN'T BELIEVE i TYPED THAT!)

JollyOldSaintNikkielas · 22/12/2006 20:00

SN schools often employ nurses?you'd get school hours then.

wickedwinterwitch · 22/12/2006 23:37

Could you cope with cleaning? Cleaners get £8 an hour round here (SE) and can do completley flexible hours. It might not be £600 a month but it could go towards it.

cedar12 · 24/12/2006 11:29

Not sure what to do. Wouldnt mind cleaning thought i might do i bit any way now dd at playschool just so i could save a bit for holiday etc. Silent terror how do you do your ten hrs all at once or 2 shifts and do you feel a bit out of it at work.

You need to find work where £600 is what you're paid for half a day. It's more fun. What about a life coach paid £200 an hour say. Or write some articles. I write stuff sometimes which is paid at about that rate. Or can you lecture on something to people who want to hear about it.
The entertainers at chidlren's parties around here get something like £200 for two hours. Basically pick something really well paid if you can.

SilentTerror · 26/12/2006 21:41

Cedar I do 3 shifts a fortnight, but would like to drop to only one shift a week. Not sure whether my manager will allow this though, they weren't keen on 10 hrs!

cedar12 · 27/12/2006 07:56

talking to some one the other day and they know someone who is starting a company employing nurse to do alternative therapys. Sounds good so fingers crossed
