I'm starting a new job tomorrow and suffering from advanced Imposter's Syndrome!

I haven't worked properly since before 10 y o do was born. I retrained and am starting a full time NHS job tomorrow. I am so scared Sad. It's been months since I finished the course and I feel I've forgotten everything and I'll be crap. It's been a difficult few months and I've had depression. I've been referred for in depth cbt as I've always had low self esteem. I'm just so nervous and need a kick up the arse. I'm worried about everything - dc, managing work/house stuff, and that I just won't be good at the job. Any advice?

Awww it will be good, I promise. Scary as shit but exciting too. And you'll feel out of your depth for a while, probably, but you'll find your feet. My best advice is only deal with what you're facing right now - You'll cope with things as and when the come up.

Congratulations and good luck Flowers

Thank you Holger. Yes I do need to take things a day at a time. I'm just running away ahead of myself with anxiety. It's just awful.

Good advice from Holga.
Well done with retraining and getting the job.
Good luck. Sure all will be well.

It'll be an adjustment but you'll be great. Make sure you list for yourself all the things you've managed to achieve by the end of the day, even if it is just getting the children out of the house on time, getting dinner sorted, etc. Don't stress yourself with unrealistic expectations about how much you'll get done when you're not in work, especially at the start because you'll probably find going back to work tiring to begin with.

Fake it until you make it no one will know

It’s actually a good sign, that you feel like this. It will fire up your adrenaline and carry you through the first day. Every every subsequent day. Enjoy.

The people who don't feel that buzz, they are the ones about whom to worry.

Thanks all. I can fake it endlessly - it's the making it stage I feel I never seem to reach Grin.

Definitely fake it. You can do it and it will be great :)

ConfusedNoMore · 17/01/2016 18:05

Hey apologies. Definitely fake it till you make it....but the making it part will be you realising you are worthy and good at your job.

Absolutely brilliant you've taken steps to get CBT referal. I'm sure that will help.

You've obviously got something that they've seen in you cos you got the job!!! Bet that wasn't easy in first place.

Bit at a time and imposter syndrome totally common. Was reading about it in relation to my job this week.

Well day one complete, lots of awkward hanging around or following people and not knowing what to do. It could have been worse bit I'm glad to be home. Same again all day tomorrow Grin
