Training whilst on Maternity Leave

I am currently on OML that is due to end in January. Prior to leaving work, i said to my employer that I would be back after OML. Now that the time is fast approaching, iI am not ready to go back and want to take some AML. There is a training course in January that I am due to attend (as i planned to be back). Does anyone out there know if i am legally able to have training whilst on Maternity leave? i know that this is possible for mums giving birth after April 07. Thanks in advance

the above board way would be to commence employment but on a reduced contract that covers the hours of the course. Therefore, you are being paid and you are covered by the health and safety policies etc.

But I did it like this:
course ran one day a week in the last 3 months OML. I negiotated with my line manager to attend this on time owing and then took back the time once I returned onto payroll. i had to sign in as a visitor so that I was covered under health and safety. I also was not able to enter my workplace or deal with my patients. Was only allowed in the training rooms.

the biggest issue is health and safety and if not being on payroll (payroll tend to temporarily remove you during mat leave) - therefore you have to consider the "what ifs" realting to health and safety and how you and your employer are covered. Signing in as a visitor usually overcomes this.

Thanks lexiemum for your quick response. i didn't think about the health & safety side.

I did a training day whilst on AML and my manager has added the time to my hols for next year. I don't think we worried about Health & Safety tbh.
