its a small tennis club, private members only, he works till 11 usually and has to lock the place up alone, is this legal?

as long as he's 18+ I'd think it's fine.

How old is he? Ie if he is 8 probably not...

Do they have a Lone Worker policy? It's not illegal afaik, but good practice to risk assess and then mitigate any risks if possible.

I had to lock up a takeaway at 11 at almost 18, didn't even cross my mind whether it was legal or not. Surely if you are old enough to be employed you are supposed to do what other employees do no matter if you aren't 18 yet.

As long as he is legally allowed to be a keyholder (id imagine a tennis club the keyholder would have to be over 18, first aid trained etc for insurance purposes).

I work in a Hotel and even though there is a Night Manager and a couple of Porters on duty through the night, the cleaner down inthe Leisure Club (has to be cleaned after 11pm) carries a walkie talkie so he is able to make contact with someone.

the place is pretty isolated and I worry someone might try to force him to open the safe or the tills to get money

there has been a few break ins lately at the place

My dh works for a high street bookies and is expected to lock up alone at 10pm and work alone all evening from 5pm dealing with £000s in payouts etc. So yes I think it's legal- unfortunately. I worry about my dh every time he works late.

I suppose one way to look at it would be that he is legally able to have his own home which he would be responsible for locking up and would spend time there alone, so not dissimilar.

My concern would be is he legally allowed to be the only staff member on duty whilst there are customers there (from a H&S standpoint). If he is, fine.

And if someone tried to rob the place then the safest thing to do is let them take the cash or goods they came for. Then let the police deal with it after that.
