Want to leave but only just started & no idea how much notice.

So I started a job as a lunchtime supervisor in a school just after half term (last week!). I really don't think it's the job for me at all.

Added to that a health issue (tummy & other troubles) which I thought was gone, reoccurred the day before I started. Doctors are now investigating this further. I feel I've taken too much on.

I need to leave this job but I've only been there 6 days and feel terrible about doing that. I just feel so useless at it and miserable, I come home and cry. I can't stop.

I want to hand in my notice but I've got no paperwork, not signed anything so I've no idea how much I need to give. Any ideas?

A week but if you are that upset, just let them know you won't be back in tomorrow.

Sorry you're feeling so down, Op. Hopefully getting your health issue sorted will help.
Just contact your immediate manager and tell the you cannot continue due to health issues. The chances are you will be allowed to leave without working a notice period as you are not well and haven't yet signed a contract . They may well still have other people who applied for your post who can be contacted to see if they still want the job.

You started a job without having a signed contract or indeed any paperwork at all?! Madness. Was there any written correspondence (by letter or email) about the hours, salary and other terms, or was it all done by phone?

If there is literally nothing in writing to say what the notice period should be, I don't think you'd be legally obligated to give them any notice at all. Of course morally speaking you might want to give them a bit of notice (to the end of this week, for example). But that's it.

If you've not been told what your notice period is, then you don't have to give any notice at all (the one week's statutory notice doesn't kick in until you have worked there for a month, so doesn't apply to you).
