Should you ever go back ?

To cut a long story short ,I left my job of twenty years to start in a new position ,my new boss was a complete bully ,physically and mentally ,I lasted a whole four days in this job .
I have now found myself unemployed and have a temporary job at the moment ,I have a family and bills to pay so this is far from ideal .My old boss phoned and offered me my job back ,staff have also been in touch to asked me to come back . However I don't know what the right thing is to do ,should I hang tight and hope I get a permanent job soon ? Time is not on my side as I only have a few weeks before money starts to run out,my previous job was ok ,staff were nice but long commute ,any help would be grateful

Just take the job and be grateful it is still open to you and you can carry on supporting your famiy. There is nothing stopping you from looking for another job and leaving again, but you are always better off in a job than unemployed, surely?

I agree - take the job and use it as a stopgap till you find something better. It sounds like they really want you back, so use it to your advantage and negotiate a better salary or to change the reasons you left in the first place.

Me too - go back. And if they're that keen on you going back, negotiate a rise.

What were your reasons for leaving? Did the other job pay more, or offer more chances of promotion? (I mean, before you found out what the reality was.) If it was things like that, talk about it to your old boss, see what they can offer. Clearly they want you, so let them show how valued you are by offering more, be it money, responsibilities, opportunities, training. Then you can stay with things the way they are, or use the time to find something which really suits.

Can only echo the others - go for the old job, I can't see any reason not to.

People wanting you to go back definitely isn't a failure - when some people leave, the others left behind breathe a big sigh of relief!

lieselvontwat · 01/11/2015 17:30

Nothing wrong with going back if it's the best option you have. Perhaps you could say the only reason you left was because the commute was getting too much, and use it as a basis to negotiate more home working?

JeffreySadsacIsUnwell · 01/11/2015 17:33

Agree with others - take it back but try to wangle some home-working if you can!
