Interview Saturday

I have an interview tomorrow for what could be my dream job.

The ad said immediate start and I'm worried now that I am already out of the game because I have to give a months notice in my current position and also have a week's holiday booked in December that can't be changed.

They know from my CV and from emails back and forth about the interview date that I am working.

When I was recruiting in a previous job I would always rather wait for the right person to work their notice rather than take the wrong one in a rush.

What are people's experiences of this?

Surely, most candidates will need to give notice?
Or arrange childcare.
Or something else.
Probably not many candidates will be able to start immediately.

Effendi · 15/10/2015 19:17

Oh God I keep thinking today is Friday. It's on Saturday, not tomorrow.

Indeed Bike one would hope so.

There is quite high unemployment in my area so likely to be more candidates who could start straight away. Just hope that they are not right for it.

I work in recruitment and some posts are advertised with immediate start, ie ASAP or 1st of x month (which could be the following month, ie one or two weeks away, but generally we know that people will have to give notice. We have always waited for our first choice candidate (all reserve candidates). However our work tends to be fairly specialised. Don't forget that it may be possible to take holiday to reduce your notice period.

Well I had the interview and it went really well I thought.
Will know on Monday. Fingers crossed.

Good luck Effendi

fastdaytears · 17/10/2015 21:26

Good luck!

When I've said immediate start on jobs it's always meant that immediate start is good if it works for the right candidate, rather than that would take a less good candidate just to have them in straight away. Will always wait, and notice periods are LONG in my industry.

daisychain01 · 18/10/2015 08:12

What they mean by immediate start and what they eventually do are two different things. Its just to signify they won't hang about. But I'm sure they wouldnt go ahead and recruit a candidate just because they can start on Monday. They will assess all CVS including yours and if you shine out as being who they want, they will likely be realistic to know you have to serve a notice.

Are you on a 4 week notice period?

how did it go?

Effendi · 18/10/2015 08:51

Had an email yesterday afternoon. I got it. Amazing!

WipsGlitter · 18/10/2015 09:02

Did they ask about notice or start dates at the interview?

fastdaytears · 18/10/2015 09:03

Yay!! Wine Cake Flowers

Effendi · 18/10/2015 09:13

Fab news well done yaaaay

KiwiJude · 19/10/2015 01:41

yay, congrats Effendi :)

Effendi · 19/10/2015 06:21

Thanks everyone. I'm still in shock a bit. Wasn't expecting anything at all. I'm not in UK and it's difficult for people who don't speak the local language so find work.

Excited but nervous too.

Nice one Effendi. Congratulations.

Chchchchangeabout · 19/10/2015 09:28

Congratulations!

Effendi · 21/10/2015 05:47

I'm wavering now as I have heard some not good things about this company. Hiring and firing at will, walking on tip toes around the boss. They tried to stiff me on holiday entitlement too.
It's less money and benefits and a longer commute but more my area of expertise and more variety than my current post.

I'm so undecided. Would it be bad form to give back word now?

BikeRunSki · 21/10/2015 07:12

You said it could be your dream job. Won't you regret it if you don't give it a go?

Effendi · 21/10/2015 19:37

Yes I may regret it but jobs are hard to find here and employment protection almost nil. My current position has great benefits, far more than the new and it's safe. I need to think it over some more.

Funny OP, when I read your first post I thought 'there's a company with a high turnover...' Good luck whatever you decide.

Effendi · 21/10/2015 21:17

Lonny yes I've heard this too since. I can't take the risk. Am so pissed but it's better to know now.
