I work for the NHS and my manager is fab. My son is at school and had a runny tummy so had to have a day off. What am I supposed to do though when he has to be off for 48 hours post last bad tummy and he's still going? I can't have holiday as there is no space and we're short staffed. My husband is a teacher and can't have the time as it isn't emergency carers leave as that would have been today. What have others done in this situation, it must have happened to loads of people! Thanks. Xx

That is tricky. I have to drop mine at my mum's on the way to work when it happens to me.
I don't know what if you don't have family or friends nearby though.
Is there an emergency childcare website?

Emergency childcare as previously said, not cheap, but as a single mum I often have no other option.
I have to say the emergency nannies I have had have been fab.

It's horrible isn't it? As you said, carers' leave would be for today only. After that you would be entitled to ask for either emergency AL ( but you said it's all taken) or unpaid leave

jellyjiggles · 13/10/2015 17:45

I either take unpaid leave, annual leave, phone the grandparents or dh has to try to take the day off.

We've split unpaid leave half a day each. It's not easy but it happens that rarely I try not to worry to much.

You're are expected to pay for an emergency babysitter or make arrangements with family members. You have no entitlement to time off I'm afraid. The law on unpaid time off for dependants only allows you enough time to make alternative childcare arrangements (generally half a day).

I would have the same dilemma. My family wont keep my ds if he is sick. And he has medical needs so cant leave him with an unfamiliar person.

The reality for most parents is that you've unfortunately gone down with what dc had......It's not right but few other choices.
