Anyone worked as a tutor?

I currently work as a freelance writer, and while I enjoy the job, I'm finding there's less and less work out there for me. I'm therefore looking for something extra to do for a few hours a week. I live in a naice area, and private tutoring seems to be big business, so I'm considering offering English tuition for various ages.

Is this a silly idea? I don't have formal teaching experience, although I did lead some study groups at uni. I'm willing to put the work in and learn about the curiculum etc if it means a decently paid part time job at the end of it.

I'd be interested in hearing experiences of this kind of work and how people got into it.

I used to be a teacher and am now a tutor. Personally, I would say teaching knowledge is invaluable because it's not just what you teach but how you teach. Also, it's not always that easy to interpret the exam syllabus.
Tutoring is my only form of income and I only earn about £10k per year out of it due to school day restrictions (i.e. only time for teaching 3 hours a day) so I'm afraid it won't be well paid even though the hourly rate is good.
Saying that... As long as you don't claim to be a qualified teacher then there I no harm giving it a go

If you decide to give it a go, feel free to PM me and I'll give you details of places I advertise, etc

Thanks Chelle! I'm not expecting it to be a massive money spinner, but it seems better paid than working in a supermarket or other typical part time jobs. Don't get me wrong, I'm not just in it for the money. I think I'd also find it quite satisfying and I do love working with children. Thanks for the offer to send more info. I might just take you up on that!

That was my decision. I feel lucky to be able to take home the same amount as working in a supermarket but work less hours
