DD is due a tax refund for the current tax year. Her employer has said they can't afford to make the payment in one go. I thought they must have kept all tax deducted ready to pass over to HMRC (if it had actually be due to them). Is this not necessarily the case? It is a very small firm - will dd just have to negotiate sums and timescale with them or are they obliged to pay it straight away?

Are you sure its tax and not another type of deduction? All my tax refunds have come direct from hmrc (tax office) as it is them who have your tax and calculate and see if its been over/under paid.

Thanks for replying Winchester. I had always thought employers paid over the tax to HMRC as soon as it is deducted, but maybe not. The gov website says if a refund is due for a current tax year, it will be made by the employer. It doesn't go into any detail about timescales though!

Is DD still working for them? If so a monthly adjustment over the rest of the tax year is reasonable IMO.
If she no longer works for them, I'd expect it all back sharpish but in reality it took 18 months of phone calls, and being caused of hiding the money they said they had paid me

Sorry to hear you had hassle addicted. DD does still work for them and loves the job, so wants to be amenable, but not messed about!
