Asking for a payrise?

Is there a better way of doing this? Letter or face to face? I have a strong case but it is in the knowledge of knowing that other less senior people in the firm are earning more (the boss will know that I know this).

I know you shouldn't compare salary to other staff but I am just wondering what's the best way to go about this?

Less senior people earning more isn't always a good reason though (unless they are all men and you are token woman)- if you've been in the organisation for ages and they've been hired in, then that's just the market payign a premium to those who move. Loyalty to a company isn't always rewarded financially.
JUstify it better by demonstrating you've taken on enhanced responsibilities / beaten targets etc etc

Thank you. The office junior earns 75p per hour less than me. The most recent member of staff taken on with my input is earning £9K more than me.

seriously - you will need better reasons than that; the person taken on will have been on the open job market more recently than you. In fact probably the most effective way to get a raise is to have an offer from somewhere else (one that you're prepared to accept if negotiations don't pan out!) and ask if they'll match it.

If you have been doing extra work or an extra project ontop of your normal job you probably have a strong case

However this does not guarantee you a pay rise !

How much pay rise are you expecting % wise ?

Because I expect in the current climate pay rises are very small or non existent eg 1-2%

I would look to move up a pay scale or move company to a different job

Does your company have an annual pay review ?

The way to get a decent pay rise is to move jobs. I have achieved all big jumps in my pay this way.
