Can I wear trousers to an interview?

I have got an interview !!!!

Its for a management job, thing is I think I now look smartest in my black trousers, and red/black check jacket. But back in the days when I last attended an interview (16 years ago !!) a woman would Never have worn trousers for something so formal. I know it seems stupid but, should I, or just my straight black skirt.

And, I've let my hair grow while I've been out of action. It's shoulder length. Is short hair more professional looking?

Sorry, this means quite a lot to me.

when I used to interview clothes mattered less to me than the handshake - anyone with sort of rested their clammy hand in yours like it was a dead fish which might disintegrate at any moment was on a hiding to nothing with me I'm afraid.

Well, I went. Trousers no problem, I arrived early for the interview, and every woman who entered/left the building was wearing black trousers!!
The I.T. director was casual in an open-necked shirt, no jacket, and the HR consultant (female) looked like an unmade bed !.

I don't feel very confident about it tho', wish I'd been more assertive. Can't honestly say I know if I did well or not, which probably means not.
Never mind, the interview experience is always valuable.

Easy, every job I've ever got I've walked out of the interview convinced it was a washout! Hang on in there.xx

Thanks MI, it's just that at the end of the interview I asked how they were planning to progress. The HR consultant said, "well, we are interviewing some more next week, and should look to make a short-list by around Wednesday, IF we feel we have found anyone suitable to shortlist. If not, we'll re-advertise."

As she'd just spent an hour with me (the last 20 mins or so kept looking at her watch) I guess that's not a very positive message.
