I need to hire some admin help - no idea how much to offer.

I run a marketing company (well it's just me) and I have so much work on at the moment I need some help.

Ideally, I would like someone to work from home starting at about 6 hours per week and increasing with the workload.

It would involve finding articles/images on the web, bits of admin, maybe monitoring some social media accounts.

I have no idea what I should expect to pay. To add some context, I charge the work out at £30 per hour.

We pay our admin staff between £10 / £12 per hour depending on experience. Different industry to you though. They do general admin, office management, audio typing, reception work, admin for the finance side of things. We are Midlands, on outskirts of major town.

I have just done similar. Offered £15 per hour in London. Just advertised through local parent Facebook groups and quite a few ppl apply. Found someone great.

Hi - £15ph is reasonable in my opinion given you are not paying tax or national insurance and the person themselves is responsible for their own plus the costs of working from home re: electricity, having a phone, computer etc. You also obviously don't pay sick pay etc so it doesn't compare. I currently do similar for that rate of pay and am actually looking for new clients as one of mine is scaling back her work to spend more time with family.

Has anyone used PeoplePerHour much? When I have looked on there the adverts from those offering work often seem to be incredibly vague and I suspect you could spend a lot of time simply seeking clarification before you even got to preparing a 'bid' for the work. I've never used it to offer work but can imagine having to trawl through a ton of messages and proposals in response.

I have used PPH previously but was never successful in getting work because in my field (accounting) there were lots of people based overseas who would bid on everything at really low prices.

I must admit I was a bit half hearted about it as well, it wasn't my main income but earning a little extra would have been nice.

I have spent c£3K on PPH over the past few years (proof reading, website development, PR, admin) so the jobs are genuine. I get the sense that new freelancers use it when they first start out but then move off into RL for better paid work. I love it because you find people who are free now. I often don't have time to search for x or y.

I have 'met' some great freelancers through it, who I still use now on their normal day rate even if they bid a silly price on the original job as being freelance I know we all need to make a living etc.

I haven't won much on it. You have the best chance of winning jobs that are a close match to your experience. The admin tasks seem to have the most people bidding.

I, too, have used PPH and have found two great (actually, amazing) freelancers that I now work with long term. Both have moved off PPH though.

FWIW, I haven't had the same success with Elance.

i used to do freelance admin and you have to bear in mind the freelancer will be paying overheads like computer, running costs, a percentage of their rates etc and will not be getting sick or holiday pay, and also may need to charge a little more for bearing in mind work is not always guaranteed - so to cover the quieter times. I think it's fair to pay a good rate to a freelance admin person, depending on what you want them to do. In my area some specialist PA types will charge £25+ per hour. I think around £15 is fair, although if I were doing freelance admin these days I would want between £15 - £20 per hour minimum (no longer doing it thank god, wound me up after several years!). You'll also sometimes get support through weekends / evenings for short notice projects, if the freelancer is prepared to take it on which you would not necessarily get with an employee. Many freelancers have great skill base as they work with so many different projects / people learning new things all the time.
