Jewellery website opinion please!

Hi, our jewellery website went live in March this year, its one I've done myself using WIX, so I know its not the greatest! - but we've actually only had 2 orders in 4 months. I appreciate that the photos are not as good as they could be and our products aren't expensive compared to other similar products online; we're actually selling ok on Facebook and we supply to two shops locally who have both made repeat orders from us so we know its not the products at fault....

My friend and I started our business in November 2014 so I'd love to know if there is something glaringly obvious as to why customers aren't ordering on the website and I'd also love to know what you think as I've never done this before. Many thanks for reading this!

Our website is www.tiamolotti.co.uk

Ok, it looks better on a PC but still looks very amateur.

the pictures vary in size. In the Bambino section it's completely different when all pages should use the same format for viewing and descriptions.

Onto the descriptions, the first thing I note is that you are often calling Swarovski crystal beads things like 'Swarovski amethyst stones' and when coloured ones are combined with clear ones you are saying 'Swarovski amethysts and crystals'. They are all crystals, just different colours -amethyst coloured crystals, not amethyst stones etc. It looks unprofessional and as if you don't know what you're talking about.

There is no sizing information. I am guessing the bracelets are all on stretchy wire? But you give no indication to the size. The rings - what are sizes 1,2 and 3? If the bracelets are on stretchy wire then let people know they stretch!

The tags on the jewellery. What is on them? Nobody can see. If they are meant to be something special and a form of showing branding, then you need to be able to see.

Again, I'll mention hallmarking. I can see '925' stamped on one of the jump rings/bails holding a charm. That's not hallmarking. It actually means nothing, anyone can stamp 925 on anything at all. A hallmark is done at an assay office (London, Edinburgh, Sheffield or Birmingham) and will have your very own makers mark, standard mark, assay office mark and additional marks if you want them. Only these marks are hallmarking and only these marks will tell you if an item is what it says it is.

Weigh your pieces. If any of the pieces of jewellery you have made, weigh over 7.78grams in silver then by law they need to be hallmarked or you cannot advertise and sell them as sterling silver. So, for the bracelets, it will be the weight of all the silver beads, the tag and the charms you are adding. It's not likely they are over weight as I imagine the beads are very light and thing, but it's worth checking.

Remove the 925 thing. Seriously. That has to be the worst thing on the site! Why have you titled some as '925 silver' and others as '925 sterling silver'?? Sterling silver IS 925, you don't use both, should never use '925' as a title or description and again, 925 means naff all, only a hallmark does.

Take all photos in the same lighting. The last 3 on page 3 of the bracelets look out of place, have shadows and a hint of a yellow glow.

Most people will miss that there is more than one page as you can't see the tab for the next page without some serious looking for it.

The tag, again. The placement of the tags is confusing. Sometimes they are at the back, sometimes they are 90 degrees to the right, sometimes to the left, sometimes at 45 degrees. Put them all dead centre in the back or wherever you choose to place them, but put them in the same place. They look like a haphazard afterthought otherwise.

Just noticed the tags have '925' stamped on them. Is this all that is on them? It's not worth it, it's meaningless. If you want to use tags brand them or hallmark them. You already have prebought charms/bails with '925' stamped on them.

Hope I didn't sound overly negative, but over the years we have realised the only way to sell is to look like a big player, and the only way to achieve that is to get pro photographs, beautiful website etc etc.

Much of what we did in the early days was a bit rubbish as we did it all ourselves!

This is the sort of thing you are competing against

That's a fair point in one way but you need to compare like for like rather than handmade and a mass produced retail jeweller.

That said, handmade you do need to compete on a level but that's where design comes in,as does targeting your market, confidence and looking professional and unique, which is seriously important. But then there is 'design' and design.

Op, I spotted a site earlier that does very similar bracelets to yours. Can't remember what it's called but began with L. The bracelets and rings are very similar, almost identical in some, same charms etc used, prices a little cheaper on some things but they have a bigger following and are paying for ads, look much more professional and successful. Check out the competition for your kind of jewellery and work to beat that. Pick up some tips from your searching and think what you can do to improve on what they do.

If you want to make a living out of handmade jewellery you have to be good, unique and really work it. Get researching

Eek,that's going to be costly. Honestly, I would reconsider. For the time being at least.

You can easily create something more professional with WIX and the photography and descriptions are just as more important. As is research and marketing

Grumpyoldblonde · 04/07/2015 18:14

It will be costly Blueberry, One aspect of my work is to check (completed) websites for obvious error, pm if you need some help - I agree descriptions and pictures are vital - you need to make people really want your products (and they are my cup of tea!)
