Where can I find part time work?

Seems to me that the only way to get p-t work is by starting off f-t. Have never seen pt jobs advertised. I'm an accountant already working pt, but needing to work nearer home. Has anyone any suggestions where I should be looking? I'd be quite happy for a career change if only I could find something to fit round the demands of a family.

where do you live?

tiredandgrumpy · 14/11/2006 08:56

I'm in St Albans. I've been commuting into London for my current job, but it's just going to be too difficult with 2 kids, so need to find somewhere more local.

with accounting you should be fine! Book-keeping from home, p/t lecturing in local college. 1:1 tutition for A levels etc?

tiredandgrumpy · 16/11/2006 19:58

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm struggling to find anything that pays enough as it won't be cheap to put 2 children in childcare. Rantothehills, you suggest b-k from home. Do you have any experience of this - can you recommend a way into it? I'm not sure I've the initiative to set up my own business, but would love to do some sort of contracting/advice work.

Sorry tiredandgrumpy, can't really help, but can sympathise. I travel from harpenden to london for work. We only moved here in sept but have realised i don't wantto carry on. its fine for dh but too difficult for both of us, so like you am trying to find something more local. I'm parttime now and struggling to find anything parttime without a big pay cut. I know i would save a lot in train fares and childcare but feel would be giving up on career. Have you looked on sites like publicsectorcareers.org and jobsgopublic?

anniebear · 29/11/2006 17:48

I have an advert in the Jobs section entitled selling Childrens books

Might not be quite what you were thinking of, but take a look, there is loads of info on it

My Friend also sells them, but a bit more seriously than me, she is making really good money and has a 3 and a 1 year old that she takes with her

Steppy1 · 30/11/2006 09:17

there's a really good website called "mum and working" which has all sorts of jobs

\link{http://www.mumandworking.co.uk/I've put the link here}

I've found it useful in the past....hope this helps !!!

Tiredandgrumpy
The last company I worked for found their part-time bookkepper as he put a flyer in their post tray at the local business park (lots of small companies). If there is anything similar near you, then that might be worth a shot. Otherwise if there's a local paper, you could keep your eyes open for ads.
The small firms I have worked for have only ever needed someone in 2 days a week, so it sounds very possible.
Good luck!

Why not apply for a f/t post then at the interview, if it's going well, ask how flexible they are on the hours?

I work PT but bring in FT fees by working faster, no lunches & am available by phone from home if there's an emergency, and that tack has always worked for me.

lackofgravitas · 13/12/2006 21:55

Public sector? Local government etc ... often a bit more flexible than private sector. They almost certainly won't advertise specifically part-time jobs, but it's worth enquiring.

Judy1234 · 13/12/2006 22:26

Can you not just advertise to do book keeping and accountancy services to small businesses locally, contact local business link, advertise, etc. In other words set up on your own. Also marking exam papers. I used to do that for an accountancy body.

I think you might get a bit more per hour (£100 per hour plus presumably) as a self employed accountant than the cleaning options mentioned below.
