Do you have a second job? What did you do? Where did you find it?

I currently work 27.5 hours across 5 days. The hours fit in pretty well with school (I'm a lone parent to one DS) and the pay is OK but I hate the job and I'm desperate to leave.

I've got an interview for another job which looks perfect...except it's only 20 hours a week (4 hours a day across 5 days) So, while the hours are great for school, the pay is going to be considerably less. However, I really like the look of the job, and I really want to leave my current job so I'm considering taking some kind of second job....but I don't know what, or how to go about it!

Ideally, I'd like something that I can do from home in the evenings. I'd like to keep after school time fairly free so that I can take DS to his extra curricular activities (and avoid any childcare costs) DS is also going to start spending one night a week with his dad, so that'll give me one evening free to go out to work if needed.

Any ideas? I have no particular skills! I did do some copy-editing/proofreading courses a while ago but little experience and suspect that there are millions of freelance copyeditors/proofreaders out there.

Hi there, I was in same boat as you and started an ironing service. This may fill some people who hate ironing with horror but it worked for me as I got to do this in the evening so chose my own hours really. I just thought of it as calorie burning for money and surprisingly I found it quite satisfying. I've got local customers so offer a collection and delivery service with a 48 hours turnaround. I got my customers from leafleting door to door. I know that my prices undercut the local commercial ironing service. You can price it by weight or item. I do item and purposely priced bedding high as ironing duvets is no fun at all. Just a suggestion that worked for me and can be done at home when children are in bed plus you can guiltlessly watch soppy films at the same time. I know that the people are provide the service to really appreciate it and that is good to know.
