a career or a job?

Mine is a career. I wouldn't say I was amazingly ambitious but I do want to progress.

hester · 13/11/2006 21:54

A job, sadly. It used to be a career.

Linnet · 13/11/2006 21:56

I have a job which i love and it's interesting and fun to do, most of the time. All I want is to go to work do my job come home see my kids and get paid at the end of the month.
There are others at my workplace who feel exactly the same, we were talking about it just the other day in fact.

Do you ever want to work full time again though? Will your kids still need you when they are teenagers? They may not want to speak to you but to come home 5 nights a week to an empty house...

So where does it stop this career/job thing?

I re-trained and work full time, kids now well into primary school. Yes, I want job/career that interests me especially when kids are no longer at home.

a paid hobby! I am very fortunate

foundintranslation · 13/11/2006 22:32

I'm FT atm (going part-time soon) but definitely a job. Or possibly a profession.

unknownrebelbang · 13/11/2006 22:36

A job, but a good job that I enjoy.

How do people define a job as opposed to a career?

foundintranslation · 13/11/2006 22:37

I'm not climbing any rungs of any ladders. (In fact, I'll be changing fields when I change jobs). That's basically my definition.

foundintranslation · 13/11/2006 22:37

(sorry - when I go PT it'll also be a change of job. Realised how confusingly that read)

BadHair · 13/11/2006 22:40

Job. Used to have career, or at least a very good job, but now it's definitely a job. It appears that employers only offer part time work that is repetitive, dull and suitable only for thick people.

funnypeculiar · 14/11/2006 10:26

To me ...job is something you do, go home at 5:30 (or whatever) and don't think about. Isn't going to take you anywhere much ... You might enjoy it, you mightb not.
Career is more emotionally invovling, less 'putdownable' and has future development inbuilt. But not necesarily immeadiately. You have a sense of 'this is what i do'

Actually, reading that, I DO have a career ... just one I care less about than I did BC

funnypeculiar · 14/11/2006 10:27

And i should be doing it now rather than faffing on mn...
