Using Twitter well - what do you do?

Just wondering what people think about using twitter well....

I've been on it for a year or so under a pseudonym posting only about an academic subject I'm passionate about (but it's not the one that earns me money...).
That's helped me see how people use it professionally.

Now for my main work (legal consultancy in a specialist quite groovy/fast moving area) I've just set up what appears to be a personal account (photo of me+child) but where the contents are really presenting the "me" that I want customers to see IYSWIM. I'm only following the companies I want work from and that I want to be seen to have a relationship with IYSWIM. So things like saying "I just bought this book written by my lovely client Pat" - that kind of thing.

I have linkedin too which is obviously an official work site.

I'm working on blogging/a formal website - but have to be careful because I don't want to attract lots of nutters.

What do people think? Does anyone else use what is on a face of it a personal Twitter feed that is really personal branding?

I did have more than one twitter handle at one point.

Then I realized I wasn't doing justice to any of my Twitter accounts, so now I just have one. And I use it for business as well as pleasure.

I have never attracted a "nutter" on there or any other online entity.

I am no expert, but how about

  1. Planning tweets in advance.

  2. Tweeting at a time when you think potential customers will read them (rather than when convenient for you to send them).

  3. Think about what content your potential or repeat customers will want to read about.

Thanks Vivacia - very helpful.

It's quite disciplined isn't it?

sorry meant to add - have replaced photo of self+child with photo that's the same as on linked in.

It felt a bit fraudulent and none of the women I do business with have it so I'm following their lead.

Plus it was 10 years old so people might have expected me to have no wrinkles at all!
