Hi, I've just picked up some freeelance work, which will hopefully become a regular gig.

what do I do next? do I need to set anything up or inform anybody etc?

I'm bound to go over tax allowance in the next couple of months, so just wondering what I do about that?

Hi,
Just call HMRC, they are very helpful, see the website, you will need to declare your earnings via a self assessment form but it is very easy.

When I became self employed a few years ago the Inland Revenue were running courses for the newly self-employed. I found it a really useful session and it was good to meet others setting up too.
Good luck!

for now you have to register as self-employed. www.gov.uk/working-for-yourself/what-you-need-to-do

then you'll be asked to do a S-A in April next year and your tax will be due after that (by end January the following year) - it's a long time away so make sure you save the tax that'll be due somewhere safe till then so it's not a shock.
