seen the other thread and wondered what teachers ACTUALLY like to receive!

For the last two years all the teachers in dds school have asked for a voucher for a blanket in war-torn/disaster areas. Someone from the PTA sold them to the parents.

NatalieJane · 07/11/2006 14:54

£30 on vouchers? DS has 3 teachers

Smellies it is then....

Booboobedoo · 07/11/2006 14:55

Usually booze for me too, but I'm pregnant this year, so chocs.

I only took over my school a couple of years ago, and the first year I hardly got any prezzies, as I was still being sized up.

Last year, however, I got tons. Didn't really care what it was, it just felt great to be accepted.

Also, letters telling you how great you are and how much you've improved their child's confidence is lovely.

For pre-school i buy several individually wrapped bunches of carnations in different then wrap them together into a huge bouguet. The teachers can easily split it and choose their favourites to take home, and you still get the impact of a big present.

twelveyeargap · 07/11/2006 16:12

I wouldn't spend £30 each on three teachers! Not made of money! I think the idea of clubbing together with other parents is good. I only shied away from flowers etc because I saw SO many other parents showing up with similar things.

wakeupandsmellthecoffee · 07/11/2006 20:38

cant help it but I ask the teacher directly where they want the vouchers from . We usually manage to raise 150 So its a good amount . We split it 70 /30 between the teacher and TA . No point wasting the money and getting them the wrong sort . We also get a big card and get the kids to write their name on blank stickers to put in side .

Rhubarb · 07/11/2006 20:44

Good grief! Some of you spend more on teachers than I do on my kids!

What do you think of parents who don't give anything? Do you think "tight arses" or do you think they can't afford to?

Because we honestly can't afford to. We could stretch to a bottle of cheap plonk, for her class teacher and teaching assistant, but after reading this I'm wondering now if we'll be thought of as tight arses. dd was new to the school this year and the teachers have been really good to her, but I have 5 brothers and sisters to buy for this Christmas, not counting the 11 nieces and nephews, plus parents and my own kids and dh, and he has 6 siblings on his side and as many nieces and nephews.

We can't afford to buy all those people presents so I can't justify buying teachers presents!

ChipButty · 07/11/2006 20:47

A thank you letter or card is lovely. Please no smellies or chocolate - I'm picky! A nice bottle of wine always goes down well. One of my colleagues once got given a tin of curry, as he had mentioned he liked it!

DD's teacher is very good and am very pleased with how she has progressed but he's a man so haven't a clue what to get him. Don't think choccies or flowers would go down well.

Can only afford £5 per teacher though.

Greensleeves · 07/11/2006 20:49

"presenting your kids teacher with something your kids have made is not good and will probably end up in the bin"

What a disgusting attitude.

earlysbird · 07/11/2006 20:50

dammit, knew I should have gone for primary not secondary teaching, we get bugger all!

Rhubarb · 07/11/2006 20:51

I see none of you are letting on what you think of those parents who buy nothing then!

Wine's a good one.

Or something small but good quality like a plant. But the worse thing I've ever had given to me was a very pretty soap - but so obviously used!

I want to get something really nice for ds1's preschool teacher, she is a star and brilliant with him. I don't know what she would like though.

If ds1 does make something for her specially and give it to her, I don't believe she would think "Oh god, more kids' tat!" and chuck it in the bin. That's horrible.

sorry true

i got a nirsery nurse a bottle of rapsberry vodka last year
dh got em cheap in duty free

Blandmum · 07/11/2006 21:02

I don't think any the less of kids/parents who don't give me any thing. I fact as a secondary teacher I am rather amazed if I get anything!

Nicest thing I got last year was a very nice hand made card from a girl who had been a real PITA, saying how glad she was that I had helped her!

expatinscotland · 07/11/2006 21:06

I got some of those sampler packages of whisky when we were in whisky territory last month for DD1's nursery teachers.

If I had to spend the day w/14 3-year-olds, I'd want to drink, too.
