Bad timing?

I have been in my department a few years now and am good at my job but have just been rejected for an internal promotion. I am awaiting interview feedback but basically I did not score high enough on the day. This is the second time I have been unsuccessful and it is likely that another promotion opportunity will not arise for another 2 years. I feel like I am now in a dead end as there is now nowhere further to progress in that department.

A vacancy has now arisen in another team that would be a good fit for my skills and is at the same grade as the promotion would have been. The timing is really unfortunate as I feel that if I apply I will be seen as wanting to leave just because I didn't get the other role. I know I should apply but am I worrying too much about how it will look to others?

I think it shows ambition. Just learn from the recent application process & go for it.

Don't let worrying about what other ppl think stop you.

I would apply. You've done the job for a few years and want a new challenge. Who cares what anyone thinks?

Thanks - I am going to apply for it. I've just realised that all my internal interviews I've had have been dire due to nerves but external ones have gone well and I've always got the job! Fingers crossed it works that way again.

Move team.

I was in this exact situation a few years ago. To be honest, I moved out of sheer petulance - it was a sideways move but I was really fucked off.

The sideways move worked out brilliantly. I had more exposure to the rest of the company (rather than working flat out and my rather stuck-in-the-mud boss taking all of the credit) and I haven't looked back since. I look at other talented people still in that department and now with the benefit of looking in, I can see that nothing will ever change - the middle level managers are all at their maximum levels and will never move on so there will always be a bottleneck in that department.
