Occupational health for a fractured hand?

mrswoods2be · 18/04/2015 20:37

I fractured 2 fingers on my left hand after a bad fall on Thursday. As the breaks are quite close to the knuckle joint I have a full arm splint as well as a finger splint and all of my fingers are strapped together for support. The doctor at the fracture clinic asked about the nature of my job and has given me a sick note for 4 weeks off work, I am due back to the fracture clinic in 2 weeks for a follow up appointment.
I work for a supermarket on the opticians department, I advised my manager on Friday that I had a sick note and explained what had happened, she said this was fine and could I drop my sick note as soon as possible, I said my partner could bring it on Monday and that was that. She has now called me back today and said that personell have advised for me to have a meeting with someone from occupational health, they think I should be able to still come in to work as my right hand is not affected and I am right handed.
I really don't feel I am able to go into work as I have no use at all of my left hand, my thumb is the only part of my hand not strapped up so my partner has to help me get dressed and I've spent the last 2 days in tshirts and leggings, I fail to see how I am supposed to wear a button down shirt! I am also not sleeping well of a night and coupled with the strong painkillers I am spending my days dozing on the couch!
Can occupational health override my sick note? Surely I am a liability if I'm made to go into work in a busy supermarket with a hand fracture when I have been advised to stay off? I'm just not sure where I stand in this situation? My partner is a manager for another company and he is disgusted, he wants me to say I am too ill to attend the meeting but the colleague handbook says if I don't attend they will stop my sick pay.

Occupational health give independent advice and are strictly governed in terms of what they can advise, so they won't say you are fit enough to return to work, if they don't believe you are. They can advise on what you can and can't do.

I work in HR and would always refer someone off on long term sick to OH and take their advice. Your employer may not realise the extent of your condition, which is why the OH referral can be useful.

I think you need to speak to the HR dept. and explain the Dr has signed you off but once the pain issues improve you will look at getting a fit to work note.

My understanding is that you cannot work whilst signed off because you won't be insured? Perhaps suggest they set up an occ health meeting the day before or after you see the dr again?

OP it sounds awful, ouch! Was just wondering whether the meeting has to be in work, or could they visit you at home? Would seem more sensible?

I've never been off sick before apart from the odd day I have had to take when my Son has been poorly which I've taken as 'family time' so I am totally unaware of the procedures. I felt as if they were making out that they didn't really believe me? I'm not sure where the meeting will be they just said I will receive a letter in the post. I've not officially even started my sickness yet, my first missed shift will be tomorrow! As far as I was aware once you were signed off by a doctor that was that. It's not as if I can fake a fracture!

I fractured my hand and had a splint. I was not allowed to work and my boss didn't want me in even though I wanted to be in, health and safety issue, your sounds worse. I think you need to stay off to give it time. everything takes longer.

UPDATE
My letter come today with a date for my occupational health interview they want me to come in on Wednesday, it's not a day I usually work so I have no childcare and I can't manage my 3 year old on the bus with one hand. My partner is in work that day too.

I would contact them asap by phone, and ask for a home visit if they must see you. You can explain you cannot dress yourself and need help and cannot manage on public transport etc

RandomMess · 20/04/2015 18:33

Also that appointments need to be on one of your usual working days!!!!

mrswoods2be · 21/04/2015 11:39

I've just spoke to the store manager and he said if you can't get childcare then you can't get childcare fair enough I will pass the message on. I explained it will have to be on one of my normal work days when my son is in nursery and either have to be at home or I will have to claim expenses for a taxi as I can't use public transport he just said someone will contact me. Really strange that he was calm I was expecting a bit of a fight to be honest, I'm even more worried now!
