How much should I ask for?

I am currently an assistant - considered by Senior Management to be more senior/capable amongst those in my office who do the same role.

I'm regularly treated as though I'm responsible for making the rest of the assistants shape up (I'm not - I am not a manager - they are the same level as me) and I'm the go-to person if anyone wants anything done properly - even though it is not my job, but the alternative is someone who won't bother or who won't do it well.

Yet I am not recognised or rewarded for working harder/being better at the job.

So, there is a potential opening for the most senior assistant role in the company (in the UK) but the manager is known to be extremely difficult and it's a 24/7 job - the current person works from 05:30am everyday and regularly doesn't get home before 10pm

I'm thinking of going for it - I am in with a good chance simply because the only other capable people in the office don't want to work for that manager (they're v shouty) and the rest are incompetent

My question is - the salary I would expect to receive for that kind of life-sacrificing role would be approx. 24% increase on top of what I earn now - will HR laugh themselves sick and then say no? Should I have a go anyway?

thanks Smile

What are they offering and what does the current person in that role earn? I guess that if that is set, there may not be a great deal of room for negotiation.

What would your case be to argue for more than they are offering?
