Sexist Dress Code - WWYD?

MamaLazarou · 09/04/2015 15:28

I have been offered a job which suits me perfectly. Lovely people, good salary, great location. The only downside is that the dress code states that women must only wear skirts and dresses - no trousers.

It wouldn't be a problem for me to wear a skirt to work every day (trousers don't look good on me anyway) but the rule strikes me as archaic and I'm worried that it would be indicative of a deeper misogyny within the culture of the organisation.

WWYD?

Almostapril · 09/04/2015 23:38

Omg I am speechless

Stevie77 · 10/04/2015 08:08

Could you update us what their response was when you say your reasons for turning it down? I'm curious

TywysogesGymraeg · 10/04/2015 10:12

Yes please OP - Please let us know what their feedback on your feedback is! I'd really love to know why they want women to wear skirts.

Where would one report such blatant sexisim? the LA? I am the last person on earth who would call herself a feminist, but allowing some people to wear trousers and not others is nuts - especially as it's (probably) in the interests of smartness. There's no guarrantee a skirt is smarter than trousers.

Pritt - aren't culottes currently known as "skorts"?

Unexpected · 10/04/2015 11:04

What the hell kind of school is this? State or private? Following a particular ethos/religion?

ClinkLady · 10/04/2015 17:22

I nearly killed myself walking downstairs in culottes in about 1991

never again no matter they're called now.

Living · 10/04/2015 22:01

Since when have Muslim women not been able to wear skirts?! Obviously legs covered (depending on each individual's interpretation) but skirts aren't unislamic!

TywysogesGymraeg · 10/04/2015 22:18

They need to cover their legs I think though. But not an expert.

wobblebobblehat · 11/04/2015 15:36

There is no way I would accept a job with that rule and those interview questions. This is 2015 not the 1950s.

I'm glad you turned it down. I'm pretty certain it would have been the start of a rocky road for you!

prittsticksellotape · 11/04/2015 21:04

ooh yes skorts had never heard or them...read your post and was feeling directionally inadequate for a couple of days but have just googled skorts and they seem slighlty shorter than culottes (sP?). will do further research

LL0015 · 11/04/2015 21:09

Pywy & Pritt
Skorts are totally different to Culottes.

Culottes 'look' like a skirt when you stand with your legs together and only reveal themselves to be long shorts when you spread' em.

A skort on the other hand is a pair of shorts with a full skirt over the top.

Skorts originated in NZ I believe for their netball team Wink

Well, I have declined the offer - it was through an agency and I stated my reasons very clearly. They tried to offer me more money! But I have said that their outdated (and possibly discriminatory) policies would be too difficult to deal with on a daily basis. I do hope that the agency feed this back to the school.

Unexpected : it is a Christian (not Catholic) private prep school.

Well done OP for having the moral fibre to turn down what could have been a fgoid job. I admire you for sticking to your principles and hope the school do get to hear why you turned them down.
Also hope that you find an even better job soon x

VeryVeryDarkGrey · 12/04/2015 11:06

Well done for being honest with them about the reason why you declined
