Leaving my job while pregnant can I get job seekers?

I'm currently only 8 weeks pregnant but suffering at work. I work in a large chain supermarket. I've been suffering with a bad back and all day morning sickness so have struggled getting up for an early morning shift.

Ive been off sick for a couple of days and the doc has signed me off for a couple of weeks due to this. We have a sick line we ring which tracks you into a system which your line manager can see. The first day I called in my manager called 5 times and today she has called asking why I am not in even though I've rang.

I don't believe they can offer me an alternative position if my back doesn't improve as my boss had pretty much said this.

If I were to hand my notice in would I be entitled to job seekers allowence? I would hope I can find a temporary desk job or something similar but I know this will be difficult as very few companies want to hire a pregnant lady

If you hand your notice in I believe you're not entitled to job seekers allowance for 26 weeks I'm afraid :(

Regards of pregnancy if you leave a job you are not entitled to job seekers i would instead look at your maternity rights gov.uk remember working means SMP which is more than income support ....

Thank you ladies I didn't think I would be but I've seen mixed things when ive looked online. I just don't think I could be off long term sick which they class as more than 2 weeks with them leaving me be

They would be in a difficult place trying to get rid of you while you are pregnant - discrimination against pregnant women is treated harshly.

Don't hand your notice in. It's up to them to find you a job that you can do, and if you can't, to accept that you will be off sick.

It's worth hanging on, though, because you aren't entitled to JSA for up to 26 weeks if you leave a job, and then you'll lose out on SMP as well.

Your Boss is wrong, InfinitySeven is correct, and sickness for Pregnancy related reasons cannot be counted towards a Disciplinary for sickness.

What did the Doctor write as reason on your sick note?

How long have you worked there? Does your Boss know you are Pregnant / have they done a risk assessment? Are you in a Union?

Hope you feel better soon x

The doctor put pregnancy related back issues and General unwellness. I've worked there just over a year and she's know. I'm pregnant from about5 weeks as I had a miscarriage in September and wanted to lighten my load at work.

With my last pregnancy I also had back issues and including the miscarriage where I was hospitalised I had a month off work.

No risk assessment yet. I spoke to a collegue whose currently on maternity leave and she said she didn't have one until about 14 weeks.

Please do not hand in your notice. Please re-visit your doctor and ask him to sign you off to recover.

Before you go back to work ask your manager for a meeting and request they change your duties/hours to enable you to return to work.
