Alternatives to IT?

Hi,
Has anyone moved out of IT into something else?
I started working in IT 15 years ago and I'm fed up. It has been for the same large company however. I am neither a very technical super coder, nor at management level because I had children a few years ago and once you reach management you cannot work flexibly (dumb policy).
I moved to a new role late last year but the developer is an arrogant nob and I'm tired of his attitude.
I've considered retraining as a solicitor/teacher but obviously recent posts have put me off and the job market for both is dire.
I feel trapped, all be it trapped in a naice job with benefits, but when I found myself rejoicing that I might have shingles and would get 2 werks off work I reckoned there was really something wrong.
Help?!

In case anyone is interested...
I approached the client of my old technical role. He was v interested in having me back and promised to sweeten the work and make it interesting. I may even be able to get a promotion out of it.
The nob developer it seems was out for my role on his team since I joined. So now he can do it, along with all his other work.
I'm going to take stock and then re-evaluate my position in 6 months. Work on my cv for a new role in a different company. I have been offered the chance to deliver some classroom training too so will consider that.

Sometimes I love mumsnet. I am a very disillusioned programmer stuck in a part-time job coding in a language Noah used, you have all given me some ideas for how to get out of this rut! Unfortunately I'm up in Glasgow so there's not so many opportunities up here as there is down south (I think)..

I'm in NI if that helps UsainWho. All is not lost!

My first thought was project management. Or something related such as business analyst, business improvement, process improvement, quality management.

Sounds like you could offer to create a new role in your existing company, focussing on process improvement, ie to resolve the issue of people working to different processes when they should surely all be using the same one, introducing documentation standards etc. Spell out the risks to the company of stuff being in people's heads, and you may be able to carve out a new role for yourself.

But I see you've sorted the problem out for yourself anyway!

Usain : hope some of the ideas on this thread are helpful for you.

They are very useful, sometimes it just so hard to know what kind of job titles to look for in the search sites. I've been in this job for 11 years now and don't even know who I would network with! I'm going to have to crack on with my CV and focus on the problem solving (which I love) and my super organisational skills!

Usain - are you a BCS Member?

The ITIL route, like service transition, service management roles may suit someone with a tech background wanting a change.
