After some advice -
I hold a job offer which for various reasons I may not be allowed to start until the end of May. I have finished my current post so potentially have 8 weeks or so without pay which I can not afford.
Can I claim unemployment benefit for those 8 weeks even though I have a job to go to? I really don't have a clue.
I am feeling sick at the prospect of 8 weeks with no pay as I am a single mother and no other source of income. I can't think of anything temporary I can do as the application process for any job would take a few weeks surely.

I think you would be able to claim JSA - depends how your old job ended. Did they not renew the contract or did you voluntary let the contract run out?

You say you may not be able to start the job until the end of May - could you start sooner if you told them you were available to start earlier?

You could ask about some local temping agencies for a short term temp position?

Thanks Glittery - My last job ended because my training contract ended once I finished the course I have been on. My job is with the same trust but I can't start until my qualifications are through. I can't do temping work I don't think as I have no experience other than in my line of work which is in healthcare.

You should definitely enquire about claiming JSA whilst you wait to start your new position.

Is there any bank positions at your local trust? Sorry if I am way off. It's hard when you don't know occupations as such.

Sorry I can't help further. Other than asking a family member to sub you whilst you get the benefit side sorted or can pay them back. A short term bank loan even?

One of my friends was an agency worker at a school and used to able to claim during the holidays so I'm sure you could .
