Teaching creative writing?

I've namechanged....for various reasons. I've been working as a freelance writer for the past 8 years. Prior to that I was an actor. I did well almost as soon as I moved into comedy sketch writing for the radio and then had a family which scuppered me a little bit.

Comedy and radio didn't work once I'd moved out of London and had a small baby to cope with.

I then wrote romantic historical fiction...published in The People's Friend. Also wrote and still do write a lot of web content...and editing other people's manuscripts.

Do you think I could offer short writing courses locally?

I feel a little unsure because I don't have a degree in writing...this means that technically I'm not strong. I rely on instinct with most of my work...both fiction and scripts...I just understand how to format and create through knowledge I've garnered by reading, listening and watching other people's work.

I need to get out of the house...I've been working alone for too long. Would people be interested in attending a course designed to help them flourish creatively in their writing? Would they expect me to have technical knowledge I don't have? Help! I'm lacking in confidence too...:(

I'm an Adult Learning tutor, although in a bit of a different sphere, working for a county council and our Community Learning department are always looking for tutors to offer evening classes, and I would think your experience would be plenty. You could ask at any colleges local to you that offer community education. You would probably have to agree to complete a PTLLS course if you haven't done any other teaching before.

Another possibility might be the WEA?

I think you could. I have taught short courses, though I have studied creative writing. But I would absolutely take a course from someone with practical experience and no academic experience.

Thank you everyone...the WEA looks amazing...such a great organisation. I am definitely going to look at applying through them and in the meantime I think I will work on putting a course together.
