pay and new responsibilities

I have been in my job for three months and have recently been made permanent. The company has merged with its sister company and as a result the guy who was doing the same role has been made redundant.

I just had a meeting where I was informed I would be taking on all his work. The new role was explained however when asked about pay I was told that it would be reviewed and if he could he would as I have made a great contribution but if he couldn't then he wouldn't and I would have to decide what I am going to do.

What is an appropriate response to him? Should I be asking for a pay rise? If so how much. I think he will offer either nothing and say deal with it or something very small.

Anyone have any advice?

Theoretically, the guy wasn't made redundant -the job was. The company is saying that there is no need for his job anymore. The reality is often different, with people left in the business being asked to take on twice or three times the workload.

What I'd advise is that you look at the tasks and responsibilities and assess your contribution. Focus very much on the key outcomes that impact the business. From this, construct a case as to why you should be paid more. Be quite tough - if you're worth it you should get it. It's rare that a company can't find the cash to pay a valued employee, but it's often the political reasons that get in the way.
