Job Evaluation Process

I have asked to put in what I do so that I can get my job re-evaluated (it has changed quite significantly).

It's using the GLPC job evaluation scheme that most public sector organisations use.

I have put in a dry run and it's come back lower that what I earn now! I've been told that I need to sell myself and use words like 'lead', 'autonomy' etc. etc. I'm not very good at selling myself and tend to talk about 'we implemented this' instead of 'I'.

My salary won't decrease as the job evaluation just won't happen if I can't get it right, so, does anyone work within public sector who can help me. How can I get across that my role is creative/has autonomy/needs skills etc.

Think about all the things you do each day/week/month. Which of those tasks show you're autonomous, that you don't need to ask others about? Which tasks require specific skills? Maybe you do a report which uses Excel pivot tables or something. (I have no idea what your job is, so you could have far better examples.)

I think if you break it down like that, into all the things you do, it might help you work out how you can put it into the evaluation scheme, rather than taking the evaluation scheme as the starting point.

It's easy to overlook stuff you do which has value for others. For example I get a staffing report every month from HR, in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. It always contains a couple of rows that look like duplicates to the uninitiated, names of a couple of people who have already left but their record hasn't been removed yet, the occasional new start who didn't actually turn up, etc. It also contains end of contract dates.

I make sense of it all, so that I can report to my bosses on our staffing numbers, and I flag up earlier than HR the names of people whose contracts are coming to an end within x months. This turns data into useful information. Nobody told me to do it, but it provides to the management that they wouldn't get from anyone else.

So out of this - which takes me about 30 minutes a month! - I can say I have 'devised a new process', 'converted data into information', 'analysed data and provided reports for management to support informed decision making', etc. Try looking at all your tasks with fresh eyes and see what you can come up with.

Look at other jobs similar to yours but at a higher level and copy some of the wording that fits yours. That's what I was advised anyway.
