Have posted this on Chat too for more traffic.

Been out of work for quite a while after leaving DV relationship which meant leaving job and everything behind and moving a few counties away.
Due to the 'fall out' of all that I had to go on ESA for a while. Then I was moved onto Jobseekers Allowance. Not had much luck despite applying for loads of jobs and getting interviews in my old line of work. etc.
I finally get a break at a local pub/ restaurant, not work I'm used to, and minimum wage, but was over the moon.. just wanted to get back to working. I was told they could definitely give me 20 hours work (as were short staffed.. as long as i didn't mind a variety of jobs..) a week until it got busier (told this verbally.. not in writing). Great I thought.. I can come off JSA. I'd only need about 12 hours a week on min wage to get the same as on JSA roughly and therefore worthwhile. (By the way I have been doing lots of volunteering too, but I really desperately need to be earning again.. I can't manage.. and until what happened , I had always, always worked.. I've never for e.g. had break to have children etc. I hate relying on state benefits though obviously was extremely grateful they were there when I was in a dire situation and homeless )
So, I started the new job earlier this week, hard work as not done bar work /waitressing before but I took to it, all good so far, lots of praise and compliments. Also did gladly did shifts no one else wanted (when usual person was off sick) e.g. washing up in the kitchens.. (I did this 25 years ago as a student so at least knew what to expect). I had a good amount of hours this week in total due to staff shortages.. Rang my JSA advisor and she said I'd have to sign off as more than 16 hours. Fair enough... with 20 hours a week I can sign off for good. It all felt a new start for me.
And then I get told... they can only give me 3 hours work for next week. Same for the week after. There is absolutely nothing else going.
I'm totally gutted. With the wages I've earned this week, I may have to pay some back , fair enough (not sure.. am seeing my advisor next week to work it all out) But... I have to be signed off due to this week.
Then I suppose will have to sign on again due to them only offering me 3 hours (of washing up) a week for next two weeks. I don't know what to do. If I stay signed off, then I'm living on 3 hours pay on min wage a week , which of course I can't, no one could. If I sign back on, I get my usual JSA minus the washing up wages. In effect that means I work for nothing doing the job no one else wants. I have to give those wages back. For scrubbing congealed meat off pans when I'm a veggie . Which is only just bearable when I'm being paid for it.

And yes, I know I was lucky to get JSA .. but I just don't want to hear all that right now :-( there are so many to milk the system, I am not one, I want to work. but not for free. for a wage, as I can't manage. As I said , I've always worked until I had a breakdown after leaving DV and my entire world behind (the good things as well as the bad i.e. him). I want to work hard, for a wage. I did volunteer for months for a charity but it cost me a fortune in petrol and I need a wage now. I put myself out of pocket doing it and I'm glad I did do it as it helped restore some confidence. But now with this 'actual' job I feel back on the scrapheap.
I worked from age 15 to 42 so I have paid into the system. I don't even want to claim benefits now. I just wanted a job with the hours I was promised.
I know people will say 'well go and get another job' or 'go and get a second part time job to back up this one' but if it was that easy I'd be doing that now and not writing this.
I'm desperately trying to get back into old line of work, have been out all day chasing up jobs and visiting places... and saying I'm immediately available.. but I've been through this so many times now.
I really don't know what to do. If I leave this new pub job, I may not be able to go back on JSA if they find out I've turned down work. Or ,as well having the wages deducted I'd still have all the petrol and parking costs I normally do for signing on (live in rural area) if i was still signing, whilst declaring the work I do

I don't know much about JSA etc, but I just wanted to say well done for getting out of a DV relationship and restarting your life. Many sadly don't manage it, be proud of yourself.

You are obviously worried about being judged. All I have is admiration for you.

I would talk to the job centre etc. I am guessing this senario has come up before.

In the meantime I think you need to look for something else.

I can understand how frustrating this is for you. After all you have been through, you thought it was sorted and then this new employer throws a spanner in the works.

You have come so far, try not to let this blip knock you off course.

Talk to the Job Centre person: it may be that you're allowed to work a small number of hours a week without losing it pound for pound from the JSA.

I know that's not what you want to do long term, but it may allow you to keep the pub job for now, if you're not losing money on the petrol.

hi i think only £5 a week I'd be allowed to keep, so realy not worth. have been looking on the JSA site

I had spoken on phone briefly to advisor though. Whatever I earn (apart from maybe £5) would be deducted from the benefits. Yes even a 3 hour shift.. she told me that

Oh that's lousy. Probably less than the petrol, then - and with the hassle of additional paperwork.
