Returning to Work - It's not working out, is it?

Has anyone returned to work and found their role has just not worked out. I returned to work after 7 years as a sahm at the end of last year. The job was totally mis-sold to me at interview and I have given it three months but I have decided I am going to be resigning on Monday.

The job was originally supposed to be four days a week, when I turned up on my first day it had been changed to only three and I am not doing the job I was recruited for at all. I am now doing Finance, Invoicing and Payroll, areas that I have no experience in and have not received any training whatsoever.

Also, logistically it is a nightmare to get to because my lift to work has now fallen through as they have also left for a new job elsewhere. It takes two hours each way by bus, which is just too long a day for me and the children.

How do I phrase that to an agency or in a job application? Will it look awful that I have resigned without finding a new position?

Thanks in advance.

How long have you been looking for something else? It's always better and easier to look for/find a new job whilst actually in a job, and assuming you didn't start looking elsewhere on day one, you haven't given your search that long really.

While you're looking elsewhere, how much have you done to try to resolve the issues you mention? taking a position two hours away where you were always going to be completely reliant on someone else to get there was risky, did you have a backup plan/plan for their holidays? Have you explored other options to get to work? Have you spoken to your boss about your tasks/responsibilities to find out why the change, and asked for training?

These things happen and personally i would do the same as you and give my notice in.
Flowery is right its easier to find work whilst you are in work but there are too many negatives with this role to continue. Try and find something else closer to home and use the time you now have to actively seek alternative employment.
Many agencies will understand that things don't always work out and people seem to forget that interviews and probationary periods work both ways.

Thanks for your responses, it is a small company with an extremely high turnover of staff. It is a very difficult and stressful office, and the management is extremely poor.

I am going to be resigning on Monday, apologies for being so vague about it all.

Many thanks for your responses.

You have made up your mind so I'm probably a bit late.

I would be a bit worried about someone who had returned to work after a 7 year break who then only lasted 3 months in that first job. I understand the problems you describe but it doesn't look good.

Flowery has asked a lot of good questions that are likely to come up in any future interviews. It might be an idea to come up with good constructive answers to explain why you left the job - and think about how any prospective employer might view these questions.

Good luck in your job search.

Thanks for your comment. The only reason it takes two hours each way is because it takes three, sometimes four buses to get there. It was never intended that I would be using public transport as I only took the position because I was going to be working the same four days as the person who was going to be giving me a lift in. That person left the company rather suddenly so I am now having to rely on public transport.

As you are probably thinking, there is a huge amount of background detail to all of this, much more than I am posting. I just don't feel comfortable posting all the details whilst I am still working there.

Thanks x
