I know that I'm in a very lucky position to have the choice of 2. I've been a SAHM for 5 years and went back to work in Oct 2014 once my youngest started reception. I only work very part time as a midday supervisor and I like it. The pay is rubbish but the benefits are that I can still do school pick up and drop off and get all school holidays off so have no childcare costs.
I applied for and was offered another job, again it is very part time - just 6 hrs a week: 4 hours on Saturday and 2 hours on a weekday (which fit in with school hours). I was originally hoping to do both jobs but the new jobs hours on the weekday don't allow this. New job is not term time so would have to use paid childcare for half day per week in school hols. No family nearby to help, dh doesn't work weekends so Saturday is no problem.
The pay for second job is slightly less (about £160 per year less) plus would have to factor in childcare costs which I have calculated to be about £150 per year. So I would be approx £300 a year worse off (quite a lot when you earn so little anyway). Both come with a pension. I do like the idea of only working for half a day in the week and having the rest of the days free. I could volunteer to help on school trips and get all those things done which I don't seem to get time to as current job cuts right into the middle of the day. But I also like the security of having all school holidays and not having to worry about organising childcare. The second job could see an increase in hours whereas first job wouldn't, but of course would have to factor in extra childcare costs.
My DC do clubs on Saturdays so we tend to go out/on day trips on Sundays so wouldn't be encroaching on family time too much.
Can anyone offer any wise advice?
