Sickness record to go on reference?

Will a prospective employer ask my current employer about my sickness record? I had 7 weeks off with chronic laryngitis, and was told not to work. Should I mention it in my interview?

Some companies do ask. I see a lot of reference requests for former employees, they normally just ask how many days off sick in the last 3 years.

Don't mention it at interview. They will only ask for references with your permission, so after interview at the stage when they ask for references then you know they got to the point of considering you either top candidate or, possibly, in the top two. At that stage, when you give permission, you let them know that you did have a long period off sick but are now fully healthy (assuming this is true) and don't expect it to return.

Some employers will not divulge any information about sickness absence, on the grounds that it's against the current law (apparently - can anyone confirm?).

I'm sure many companies will ask, and some companies will respond. Others will ask you to complete a medical questionnaire, undergo a medical examination, or will simply judge you on your sickness record during your probation period. If your condition is unlikely to recur then you should have nothing to worry about.
