Employer requesting utility bill

My friend worked briefly in a local business.

It only lasted a week or so.

She provided her NI details, date of birth, bank details. He is now requesting a recent utility bill before he will pay her.

Is this normal or shady?

I haven't ever had to provide a utility bill when I have started a new job.

I was about to say it could be for crb/dbs check. However as your friend has now left I reckon it's shady.

Proof of address? Phone bills don't count- bank statements, council tax and utility bills do.

It wasn't in an environment where I would have thought a CRB check would be required.

It wasn't v professionally handled. No references requested, constant changes to shifts/pay rates(?). Hence the brief period of employment.

I suppose the employer will still have to fill out documentation for PAYE and do a P45 ?

The employer will still need to issue a P45, fill out the PAYE documentation and evidence that she has the right to work in the UK, even if she has now left. He'll need proof of address to do that, which is usually provided via a utility bill from the last three months with her name on.

I don't think it's suspect. She could black out any details she doesn't want him to see, anyway.

Yes, I can see that it could be legitimately required for her PAYE details.
