Burger King issue...

My 17 year old son started in Burger King 4 weeks ago - all he wants in life at the mo is driving lessons.
The pay is fortnightly -and his pay 2 weeks ago did not get paid into the bank,I assured him that there is often problems with the first pay and after intervening on his behalf they paid him from the safe.
Well he is just home in a right old mood - everyone else got a payslip today,but not him
It is difficult to not get involved but I don't want to embaress him either.
How would you deal with it?
Are they legally bound to pay him on the stated day - as I don't want them to give him a cheque which will then take time to clear - he is close to chucking it in which would be a shame as he otherwise enjoys it.

DD works in one of the concessions in Debenhams and has done so for over a year now. They regularly forget to pay money into her account or take up to 3 months to get round to paying her overtime hours etc.

I think teenagers get treated in ways adults wouldn't. Employers do seem more careless with them.

I don't know about the legal side of things but when I have changed jobs in the past I was often paid by cheque for the first 2 months rather than BACS (and also paying emergency tax rate).

I would say to him to speak to the manager if the next fortnight's pay is not in on the day. Could you tell him what to say rather than him getting annoyed and possibly losing/giving up his job (which isn't right either because it's not his fault). Doesn't matter if he is part-time or full-time, he should have had an explanation from the manager

Perhaps he won't get paid until after week 4 the first wage may be "lay" paid after he works his notice on leaving.

I would get him to have a chat with the boss/ supervisor about wages and when they get paid. I used to work wage enquiries and often people didn't realise they didn't get paid straight away or right at the end of the period worked. Our work pays weekly and the week is Sat to Fri. and paid on the next Fri. So if you work Sat it is almost 2 weeks until you get paid for it, but Fri you get it in 1 week.

Often things like this are not explained all that well and he has maybe not picked up on what procedures there are, a quick chat may sort it all out.

i'd get him to get the phone number of the wages dept direct- so he doesnt piss his manager off keep complaining about it (which he obv should but ykwim?!) has he got a contract?

he should have a contract of employment or statement of particulars which sets out pay intervals and he should be paid no later than that. most payrolls can raise a cheque or do a manual payment if he needs the cash so tell him to make a fuss and get the money he's entitled to!
