Is this a viable business idea? (aimed at mums!)

I've had this idea in my head for ages now please don't steal it Grin

It would be a place mums can come to when they're feeling particularly worn out and need a break. it would have relaxation rooms with a bed and sofa. they could have the room for an hour to do whatever they feel would relax them I.e sleep/ rest/ read/ even have a cuppa tea while their children were being looked after in another area/ room by childcare assistants.
The rooms would obv only be allowed for one person to use at a time!

Is this viable or am I living in a dreamworld!?

I would have DEF paid for this when mine were babies.

All thoughts welcome Smile

I just see things like this as another spoke in the wheel of the over commercialization of parenting. Not for me.

When I think about the investment at the hairdresser I use and the childcare I use, just to keep it financially viable, it must have been huge. The lease, the staff, regulations etc

Although it is London so the overheads would be very high.

Even if very exclusive, then you need a steady stream of high paying customers which takes high end marketing.

So an hour in the crèche say £5 and the salon side would be charged per treatment. Half hour massage £10 etc.

'Say £5' what have you based that on? What ratios would you have of staff to children? Do you believe that £5 would pay the rent for the building, the staff members wages, the NI contribution, the electric and water and rates, the business tax, the admin/accounting, equipment and damage, cleaning products, insurance, training updates etc. sorry I don't mean to come across as snarky, and I understand that this is still an early concept but these are the things you need to work out early on if it's worth investing in at all.

CleanLinesSharpEdges · 25/11/2014 14:34

Just doing some very rough workings out... In the area you're in, the size of building you'd need, the number of staff you'd require, even to cover basic rent and rates and staff salary, plus a bit back for your investor, without starting to take into account your own salary and general running costs, I reckon you'll need to be taking a few hundred pounds per hour. That's a lot of clients and You'd need them to be spending big money, not just 15 quid per half hour.

26Point2Miles · 25/11/2014 14:38

what do you have already to invest in this op?

nilbyname · 25/11/2014 14:39

Half an hour massage £10, cricket thats cheap, so cheap I would not partake as I think it would be terrible!

desperatehousewife21 · 25/11/2014 16:19

I haven't looked into costs at all yet because this whole spa idea only came about this afternoon Grin

Anyway it does seem to be working out as too costly to start up and maintain.

There was a beautician salon at our gym that parents could use while their child was in the creche or doing a class but is shut due to lack of custom.

There is a creche in our local shopping centre you can leave children while you shop.

I think what you are describing is a Maggie and rose type place but whether outside London people would be interested is the question.
