over the last week ive been ringing local hospitals trying to get on their nurse bank, only to be told that they are not recruiting, not even bank staff..its a real shock ase i lived before the 2 hospitals there were crying out for staff, i always had loads of extra shifts etc..i dont know what to do im sat here sobbing my heart out, thing is i can only work eves cos of the children so work in say a doctors surgery is not an option and theres nothing of that kind around either..im absoloutely gutted, i need to work, but how can i when i cant even go back to my chosen line of work? i dont know what to do next..im not qualified for anything else.

Spacezombie,hi there.Do you drive? Have you thought of community ie district nurse or would this not be possible?

I have an ex colleague who got a job in a walk in centre and works mainly evenings?

Have you tried ringing round direct to nursing homes???I know nh may not be what you want if used to nhs but if theres nowt else going maybe its worth ringing round nh to see if theres anything to tide you over, then keep hassling HR in the hospitals

Or what about a private agency, not the hospital bank???

Good luck, hope you find something soon

wrinklytum, thanks for replying, i hadnt really explored the option of nursing homes tbh, the 2 main hospitals i contacted told me that they are not taking agency staff either which is fair enough as the big teaching hospital i worked for before put a block on agency staff too as they had gone seriously over their budget and were afraid of losing their star rating.
id love to be a community nurse, however, daytime hours are not possible at the moment as i have a dd at home.
i feel very low.

Can you do granny-sitting? I remember when I used to rent rooms out in London to Aussies Kiwis and S Africans a lot of them used to do this. I think it was quite lucrative.

SPACEdoutZombieCADET · 03/10/2006 16:57

i dont know if there would be a lot of call for it in north wales..i really dont know.

zippitippitoes · 03/10/2006 16:58

there are loads of care homes..some must have qualified staff?

SPACEdoutZombieCADET · 03/10/2006 17:02

yes many do, however there are many that dont, who just operate with care staff, i will look into it, however i have only ever worked on wards.

SPACEdoutZombieCADET · 03/10/2006 17:11

have just googled and found in my local vicinity who have nursing beds.

anniediv · 03/10/2006 17:17

Try contacting NHS Direct, they often have nurse adviser jobs and you can work from home. In the same line, why not go for a job at a nurse agency and get your foot in the door that way. I know neither are ideal, but would get you back into the system. Good luck anyway.
