Taking on 1st employee - how did you?

Hello

Marketing freelancer here. I am getting to the point where I think I need some help. I am thinking an employee would be better than a freelancer as they'd be "mine" as it were. I haven't had any bad experiences with freelancers, but I know from myself you aren't always committed etc.

I actually liked managing people when I was at work (got to Director level so had managed lots of ppl across the years) and do miss the social aspect. We have enough room in our spare room for another desk (would check the H&S aspect) or some of it could be done at their home but I like the idea of a local person so we can meet.

I am just looking at the pros and cons. Does anyone have any good advice? And how did you take the first steps?

TIA

I've not so long ago taken on my first couple of employees, who are on zero hour contracts, rather than freelance/self-employed. I realize some people think zero hour contracts are a thing of the devil, but as a small business, it would be difficult to pay someone for a fixed number of hours during quiet times. The first person I brought in was someone I knew already, who was looking for part-time work on top of their existing work. I think this has helped as it wasn't a completely unknown quantity, which I was a bit nervous about. The second person was a previous colleague of the first, so again, not a completely unknown quantity.

No advice though, I'm just watching, in case anyone else has some.

Do you have any local business contacts you can chat to and ask if they know anyone? I'd be much happier taking on someone that came recommended by someone I knew rather than a complete strangers, especially as she/he would be possibly coming into your home.

There are lots of legal things you need to consider - such as insurance, registering for PAYE with HMRC, contracts and the whole payroll/HR side of things etc.

HMRC have their own youtube channel which is actually pretty helpful! Have a look at this video about getting started as an Employer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxAqbtWRiPI

Hope that's helpful. :-)

Following with interest as I am in a similar position...

Thanks for the responses.

I do know someone who is a good marketing freelancer who is local and might be looking for extra work...

I think I have a romantic idea of employing a SAHM who is looking to get back into work...but actually I think I need to focus on what support I need first before thinking about who can do it.

Thanks for the HMRC youtube links. Will have a look.
